Woyanne expels Norwegian diplomats

August 28th, 2007 |  |  2 Comments

The Woyanne regime in Ethiopia has told six Norwegian envoys to leave the country, citing “dissatisfaction” over Norway’s conduct in the Horn of Africa region, a Norwegian official says.

Norway was given a month’s notice to withdraw the diplomats by September 15.

Jonas Gahr Stoere, the Norwegian foreign affairs minister, said “we are surprised and regret the Ethiopian authorities’ unilateral decision”, but said the expulsion of the diplomats did not imply a break in diplomatic relations with Ethiopia.

Stoere on Monday said his ministry was unable to get any clarification from its Ethiopian Woyanne counterpart on the reasons for the order.

“We must now take the consequences of the fact that the Ethiopian authorities are upholding their decision and we are therefore making preparations to withdraw six diplomats from our embassy in [the Ethiopian capital] Addis Ababa,” he added.

  1. Hager says:

This is a step in the right direction. I hope the US Congress will pass HR 2003 and Meles will react the only way he knows – stupid and stubborn – to expell the US diplomats. That will be the day when Ethiopians will see the end of Meles. If it was not for the blind suppport he gets from the US government he would have been history ages ago and infact he would not have occupied the office he is in now in the first place.

All other embassies should take a lesson from this. They are all waiting in line to be expelled if they dare to stand for justice and with the people of Ethiopia. If they continue to choose to support the most hated dictator, they will have their embassies open but they will not be advancing their countries’ values and interests.

Why the Norwegian diplomats were expelled from Addis, hardly do I know the reasons for. Within a few days, I think, what initiates the fallout will be known. Until then, unlike Hager,I do not intend to form an opinion. It would be advisable, however, people like Hager not try to tell us, or not to let themselves live in delusion incessantly, because no one benefits from it. Even before anybody could surmise, leave alone understand, what the issue entails here comes – Hager- to enlighten us what is going to happen if the current Ethiopian government dares to expell American diplomats from Addis: the government would be history; he optimistically predicts. Is that possible when people let their blind hatred for anything guides their everyday activity they sound inane to every rational person save themselves?
