Western diplomats would like to have strong men for Africa instead of Africa having strong institutions. This has been their policy all along since after the end of the direct rule ( aka colonialism) in Africa in the 1950's and 60's. They decided to replace the direct rule by strong men of African decent when they were forced to pack out of Africa. They figured out that this twisted policy in Africa somehow serves them best ( their national interests) absent colonialism. They have come to the twisted policy that strong men serve their interests in Africa better than strong institutions where there would be accountability to the African people. Some gullible among us have or at least had the illusion that Western diplomats support democracy wholeheartedely no matter what and wherever it is in the world. Well, we have learned, though belatedely, that that is not the case at least in Ethiopia at least since May 1991 and/or more vivdely more recently since May 2005. So Western diplomats have already lost any credibility when it comes to democracy in Africa particularly in Ethiopia. We now know that when they say democracy, they really do not mean it and it is just a lip service and a cosmetic sweetening coating to shove their african tyrant strong men who serve their interest down the throat of the African people. By painting african tyrants such as terrorist meles as 'democrats', Western diplomats also try to decietfully justify pouring taxpayers money to support ruthless tyrants. WESTERN DIPLOMATS HAVE NO CREDIBILITY, NONE WHATSOEVER, WHEN IT COMES TO DEMOCRACY IN ETHIOPIA. THEY ARE NOW TAKEN FOR WHAT THEY REALLY ARE, namely, ENABLERS AND COLLABORATORS OF TERRORIST meles. derese

I do not know why the Professor is surprised about the West. He rather amazed me when I read his (the political scientist's) disappointments. Democracy, equality and justice have never been the prime motive of the West. They were scrambling the world during the colonial ear and now they are designating puppet governments. They accuse governments in the name of democracy, human rights, etc. when governments stop serving or become disservice to their interests. Do not forget the West supported The Khmer Rouge, which perpetrated genocide by killing 1.7 million of its people and did support the Apartheid in South Africa until last minutes. The West condemns countries like Zimbabwe and The Sudan for example in the name of democracy while it is supporting Kingdoms in Arab countries, heavily financing Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, funding settlements and massacre in Palestine, and backing Zenawi and others. What matters is your service to the West not what you can do to your people and this should have been crystal clear for a political scientist. Our opposition must be able to show to the West how the opposition can better serve their interests than the Woyene but doing good to our people at the same time. We must be able to convince them our service to them beyond doubt if we are going to win their support.

I believe that starts with working our differences and present ourselves as viable, strong, reliable, and predictable opposition. If we represent just a bunch of oppositions or an opposition which disintegrates when it faces some difficulty or when we think we are close to power or have leaders who think themselves as know all and thus uncompromising or consider their party as the only source from which truth, knowledge, right strategy, and nationalism flows, then we are done.
