Hailu Shawel's AEUP to merge with UDJ?

June 7th, 2009 |  |  6 Comments

(Addis Journal) — The All Ethiopian Unity Party(AEUP) might forge an alliance with the Unity for Democracy and Justice Party (UDJP), well-placed sources disclosed.

If the alliance takes place, the current AEUP chair Engineer Hailu Shawel is likely to be the coalition party’s chair.

Professor Mesfin Woldemaryam, UDJP’s ideologue, has been working hard for such an agreement, according to sources. Engineer Hailu has given Prof. Mesfin a green light to the possible merge, it was said.

The recent attendance of Hailu Sawel in UDJP’s headquarter to mark the day of Bertukan Mideks’a arrest was considered as positive sign towards this end.

Engineer Hailu in the past has been saying forming coalition with UDJP was out of question as their policies are different from his.

The now imprisoned UDJP chair, Bertukan also repeatedly said she was very pessimistic on any future with Engineer Hailu Shawl and the people he is working with.

If true, the move would be a radical departure from the long-held postion.

Both parties were in the former the colitation for Unity and Democracy Party(CUD) which also included Ethiopian Democratic League (EDL), EUDP -Medhin.

Let us all encourage them and give them our support. This time I expect them to learn from their past mistakes and work out their differences wisely. My apperciation is to Proffessor Mesfin W/Mariam.

That will be madness. If UDJ wants to destroy itself, fine. No, that is impossible. While the party leader is in prison, passing the presidency to her former enemy is unacceptable. I doubt it anyway.

The possible coalition referred to above is a possibility now that a big obstacle has been removed in the form of Dr. Berhanu Nega, and some other people.

Let us accept it; Hailu Shawl is the most charismatic, dedicated and respected opposition leader in the country. He is a very respected individual, a true patriot, and a very discipline individual.

Ethiopia has been humilated not only in what policies are advanced but also in the personalities of the individuals in power. Meles seems to equate intellingence with speaking out whatever comes to his mind in public. He rude, crude and uncultured, and this makes him a darling to the West because he nothing to hyde from them. They love such an individual because it enables them to plan ahead what they will do to keep him in their pocket. Tranparency for them is being an easy prey for spying and deceit. Melese has no idea what soverignity means except a loyality to his click around him. Hailu Shawul will be a radically different leader, a leader who will restore the dignity and respect of Ethiopia and the Ethiopians.
There is also another thing the leadership of Hailu Shawal will bring to the front: disdain to the ignorant crowd in the Diaspora, which clamors loudly but has not idea what the reality in Ethiopia is. This crowd is ignorant and politically naive to the extreme. This group is an excellent example of what does -extremisim, excitement and desruction

Unity is very vital to make sure our struggle remains solvent. We have to make sure the hard work do not disappear without any fruit.I am sure if my long time dear friend Birtukan was around she would support Engineer Hailu Shawel’s position.
