Ethiopia: Several factories shut down due to power shortage

August 10th, 2009 |  |  2 Comments

By Eskinder Ferew | VOA

During the past three months of power shedding by the Ethiopian Electric Power corporation, more than half of the factories in Akaki and other industrial areas near Addis Ababa have shut down.

The executive director of the Addis Municipal Trade and Security office told VOA’s Eskinder Firew that more than 50 percent of the factories in the region stopped operations, let their employees go and closed their doors.

EEPCo began the power shedding three months ago. Many of the factories quit operations two and a half months ago. One cement company resumed operations recently with special government permission, but government officials have extended the rotation of power outages through the end of August.

Woyane does not care as long as the factories in Adwa, Makalle and other parts of Tigrai are operating. He is doing this systematically to force “his enemies” Amharas and Oromos out of business.

I have a dream to see an Ethiopia free from tyrany and poverty and hope to live long to see the end of Meles as a respected Statesman or like Saddam Hussien

Well done. Finally, the Ethiopian government is joining the modern world being a part of the green revolution, which is out of the concern for the environment. In the meantime they are tuning up to use man power and carry on the production of goods to be exported.

For sure it is that they are exporting power through the grid that was already set up between Kenya and Sudan, hence getting more money for the national use, which is going to kept under the EFFORT stewardship….
