Daud Ibsa. He is a very clever and patient who had sacrificed a lot to balance exetrimism within his organization, the OLF, and kept the mood of needing to reconcile peace Ethiopians including conservative Amharas. Daud has no hatred for Amharas nor for any other nationality in Ethiopia. He is striving to achieve a genune Democratic Order for the Ethiopian People at Large. Even if he is at the top of the OLF, there are exteremist members of the OLF and also Diaspora Elite who hate him due to his harmonious way of handling issues with non Oromos too. I think, Dauds approach among all other political activists, hold the best future when it comes to the process of reconciliation for the betterment of Future Ethiopia. Most people do not know this guy closely. The prejudice of being an Oromo or an Amhara etc has blinded most of us to see the potential in some people.

I agree with the above comment.
Daud Ibsa is a man of integrity. He is quite different from the previous leaders of the OLF. He is not as arrogant as those of his predecessors. He is genuinely committed to seeking a comprehensive solution to all peaoples of Ethiopia and he is a type of leader that is immersed with the world of just doing the best for Oromos alone. I had a friend who was closely acquainted with Daud from their youth Student time at Wingate and then AAU. He told me that Daud (aka Firew Ibsa) had always the resolve to pursue justice for those are in need. He has an extraordinary endurance whenever he do things. Perhaps that is how he survived all the long contours of the guerilla activities of the OLF that has been conducated from Sudan starting from the 1980s. Daud also managed to escape the Derg Prison after 5 years of languishing in Maikelawi.
I believe, this guy deserves a chance and needs to be incalcated other than portraying him and his Organization the OLF as an all time Monster. The reality on the ground is different. Let’s rationality a chance to prejudice.

  77. Ethiopian says:

Remember those beautiful lines. They were a free man’s message -Dr. Berhanu Nega. They were yours.
Of course, you did rise up for freedom with the same readiness and commitment of a soldier who was ready to sacrifice his life in a battlefield. You left your materially comfortable life to land in jail where people are treated in the most inhumane and degrading fashion. Yet even there you continue to believe in human spirit. You give love for those who couldn’t transcend hate. “It is enough,” claims J.P. Sartre, “for a man to love all other men with undivided love.” Birhanu, you are showing us how a man can give undivided love to fellow men.
For you, politics isn’t an end. Power is just a means of achieving justice and freedom. That was why you espoused the virtue of honesty in politics. That was why, in a land where gallons of human blood was spilt as if it was expired ink, for political end, you tried to make politics civil. Imagine the brave young people you inspired to politics. Birtukan Midekesa. Muluneh Eyuel. Sileshi Tena. Yeneneh Mulat. Daniel Assefa. Imagine the number of Ethiopians like me who have vowed never to give away their freedom lying down. Imagine the number of people who are intoxicated with the spirit of Kinijit; the spirit you and fellow Kinijit leaders entrenched in the fabrics of their minds. In prison or in hospital (where you are now), such thoughts should spur you on.

  85. Meseret says:

Berhanu Nega is a farsighted politician, an inexhaustible intellectual, a charismatic person, and a visionary leader who is entrusted to lead our nation to a new direction, ending fifty years of dancing in a political quagmire. Unlike the “My-way or no-way” politicians of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s; Dr. Berhanu is one of the few open-minded Ethiopian politicians who not only values the idea of others, but makes the most use out of it. His charisma, his love for others, his attentiveness, sense of humor, knowledge of politics, respect to dissent, and his consummate ability to deal with people of different attitude and political interest makes Dr. Berhanu Nega the most fulfilled Ethiopian politician of all time. To many who adore him without knowing him personally, he is a rock sold refuge of hope. To his close friends, he is an inspiration and a reason for optimism. To his party colleagues, he is a motivator. To the nation, he is a true vector of change with a solid, clear-cut, and steady trajectory.

Because he is the person who can challenge the Melese regim intelectually and also pschologically. Moreover our country needs a person who is accountable for his action. we need to grow economically and a person who can lead us in that line is non other than BIRHANU NEGA.To have ambition for leadership is a virtue provided that you also have wisdom. Praising a person for what he has achieved gives him internal force to go ahead, it becomes a source of inspiration. Optimistic attitude towards anyperson helps you grow.there is nothing wrong in speaking good about a person. what we should feel sad is when we look the down fall of others. Suppoting a hero like Birhanu is our duty.

    Demis Belete
I am not aware of any other Ethiopian journalist that accomplished what Demis Belete did. Some people don’t want the existence of EPPF to be recognized, but Demis revealed it. They smeared negative propagandas and lies, and he exposed the naked truth. No one dared to go to the war zone, through Eritrea, to verify lots of activities, but he took the risk and did it. Some want us to feel hopeless about EPPF and other organizations including the Eritrean people, and yet he gave us hope by shading light to the hidden truth. One word that defines him and his friend Mej. Gen. Meskerem Ataly is that they both are risk takers and love Ethiopia deeply. More importantly, he documented the history with his camera and video. The man of the year should be a man with courage, honesty and integrity, of course, for sake of his fellow men, and fulfilling his personal values; he did it before; he did it a second time, and he will do it again, and that man is Demis Belete; comparatively speaking, all the rest are doing it in their comfort Zones except Demis Belete— putting at risk all that he owned for the sake of the people of Ethiopia.

But, I can tell you this is the only way out from the usual vicious cycle of Ethiopian politics. It may sound inadequate for some, but no hard headed leader for Ethiopia any more. The new breed of leaders must be the people’s person, with great vision willing to share, ready to be corrected and to compromise if necessary.

Dr. Berhnau is one of the few public figures that seems to clearly understand that being open-minded has nothing to do with how one treats other people, but how one treats him/herself. Our mind is autonomous from the minds of others. As social elements, we may be influenced by others, but we make our individual decision. The core idea of open mindedness is to have the capacity to admit mistakes, and gulp down our arrogance and allow ourselves to be corrected by others. If one is arrogant, proud, and hostile then he/she cannot be open-minded because they don’t have the will to accept that they are wrong.

Person of the year should be LIDETU AYALAEW, who always stood for truth and dared to expose the incapability of Hailu shawel to be a chairman of the modern party during the formation of Kinijit. Had Kinijit listened the comments of Lidetu, Kinijit would have been the strongest party we ever had. Even, this division wouldn’t have taken place. Read Lidetu’s Book (which he wrote two years ago), then you will know why all the current problems of Kinijit have occured. I know most of you would be pissed off by this comment and even would want to kill me but lets be rational and judge. Believe it or not, Lidetu is a True Son of Ethiopia. All the fabricated accusations on Lidetu were similar to what we see now on Birtukan, Andargachew, and Dr Birhanu. Guys,be aware that there are hidden killers of our struggle, by disfaming our heros and true democrats like Andargachew Tsigae and Birhanu Nega.

They boldly and unequivocally stood for the democratic rights of the people of Ethiopia and by default set an example wherever oppression and despotic rule exist in Africa. They had nothing to gain and in fact had to bear the heavy burden and pressure from a well-financed onslaught of lobbyists hired by the government of Ethiopia and others with vested interests in the status quo in Ethiopia.

My vote goes to Dr Berhanu Nega. Dr Berhanu has helped start the kinijit movement, a social consciousness movement in Ethiopia. He is not only one of the founders of Kinijit and the one with the most determination to bring about change in Ethiopia towards democracy but he is also the main architect of the election campaign. His vision of a democratic Ethiopia is met with how to bring about that change. His played the highest role in making kinijit fully democratic.

He has transformed Ethiopia’s Economic Commission into a multi million birr organization (from a budget of few 10′s of thousands) and his research known as Vision 20/20 was a serious accomplishment for him prior to election 2005.

In addition to being the most responsible for Kinijit’s success during the election and in its success to be embraced by many millions of Ethiopians, he had written a book in prison that has helped the struggle tremendously. He has taught us to stand with individual rights and to fight for personal freedom and liberty.

Dr berhanu Nega, in my opinion, has made the most contribution to bring about a positive change in Ethiopia. His contribution will impact generations to come.

For some of us this may not be the year to vote for CUD politicians. As partisan line is emerging and what we like and accept in one wing, the same might lack other values and vice versa. So, something is in the process, and may not reveal the truth until after 2008. They are all probably in post Kality syndrome, varying from fast and the end justifies the means to steady and strategic.

In 2006, the public atleast in the diaspora knew more about Birhanu Nega, Andargachew Tsege, Obang Metho, Alemayehu Gebre Mariam, Solomon Bekele, Mekdes Mesfin and two of the most visible activists of HR2003 Meron Ahadu and Mesfin Mekonen through the media. From Ethiopia, some of the messages of Birtukan Medekssa, Prof. Yacob Woldemariam and Prof. Mesfin Woldemariam, and the two judges and the third advocate who left with evidence of 2005 case. CUD’s chairman Hailu Shawel is an interesting politician as more is coming to be known about him in post Kality years. This definately is not a good time for him to be evaluated through polls, considering people have varied opinions about him until the process and resolution is concluded through the Independent Inquiry commission and the Supreme Council of CUD in Ethiopia (LMB).

Through 2006 and late 20005, media platform that brought all sides ( both sides of the current faction) and drew the attention to the diaspora’s audience ( including the silent majority) was Nigat Radio, which played a critical role in making all sides introduced to the public and its own effective advocacy and a call for Ethiopiawinet. I agree with Lulit’s comment about the host of that radio program Journalist Demis Belete. The choices he takes in politics or the armed stuggle is his own, but does stand out as a person of courage, integrity and honesty. In the end, I believe that he will be justified in some ways.

Prof. Alemayehu Gebremariam, God willing will continue to be a champion him self. My vote went for him as 2006 scholar of the year on this web site’s poll. and sense that, he will keep getting voted as on of the best in the future years. In 2007, he played a critical role in touring the states with Alemayehu Zemedhun, former judge Frehiwot and the their colleague in establishing the case of the victims of the 193 Ethiopins of 2005. That is one and very important turning point that also makes him a man of action. In a way, he stood for all in the process, not just for politicians. He is definately person of the year.

If I can vote for both equaly, persons of the year for 2007 are, Prof. Ephrem Isaac and Prof. Alemayehu Gebremariam.

I dont think Haile Gebresilasse should be in this ligue. He is exceptional and should be recognized as atlet of the year, may be the era. Specially for the Berlin Marathon. Just my openion.

Wzt/ Birtukan Medeksa should also be recognized as woman of the year. May be she should also be in a different ligue…for example ( Meseret Defar, jornalist Netsanet Demisse, Liya kebede, Mehret Mandefro… could be the nominees)

Maybe, you,the editors, should have given a little information about each candidates. There are some people whom I don’t know their contribution to mama Ethiopia. Therefore, I am inclined not to vote becuase those people that I don’t know their contribution to mother ETHIOPIA might have done a better job than those I know.
    SO LONG MAMA!!!!

my choice will be the great ethiopian Prof. Alemayehu because he did a lot of good things the last two years without being any party member and leadership postion. i think he deserved this nomine, eventhough judge Birtikan , Dr. Birhanu, Ato.Andargachew play a good role to protect our nation from woyane and EPRP dogs ato taye, “lebawe Shalqa” and estranged chair Hailu.

  474. Lenca says:

    Mr Daud Ibsa
He is the one who survived by eating soil, the dergue spies poisoned food when eight of seventeen first time trained OLF memebers where died in the West Oromia(Ethiopia).
After his survival he was caught and taken to hospital but confused the dergue spies by acting as a mad and sent to Amanuel psychiatry hospital. That is where he did history one more time by escaping from the hospital being naked as a crazy for the sole reason of liberating the Oromo(Ethiopian) people from the opressors for good. That is why he quit from AAU at early age. Since then is standing for the cause of the oppressed people of Ethiopia. He is intiator and leader of AFD which is the best alternative for complex ethiopian politics. He also believes in a win win politics, not in a win and defeate politics.
Please, all of you stopp whom you are choosing and look once again who have best endurance and determination for what he/she believes in. Mr daud is already proven to be a leader and reliable to for the purpose he stands for.
You all know that Mr daud came up with the new idea of bringing all ethiopian opposition while the butcher in Addis,i.e.,Mr zenawi was inviting OLF alone for power sharing. Daud rejected the invitation neither to offened Meles nor to please kinijit, but he believes in the all inclusive politics which is the only way out of the of the complex Ethiopian political problem.
So guys pause your idea and think one mor time to go for a leader who has a good vision for the region(horn of africa) and proved to lead in a difficult time.
    Merry chirstmas

  476. Gudu Kasa says:

I assume “person of the year” status is reserved not only for those who made headlines for good deeds. It applies to those who took effective actions that would affect many (and for many years to come too) as well. If my understanding is correct, please accept my nomination of Yosef Yazew for person of the year. Yazew single handedly crippled the movement (Kinijit, that is) which the TPLF, with all its state power (military and diplomatic resources), was not able to slow.
