Ethiopians, whether they are farmers, traders, teachers, writers, newspaper editors, should know by now that they are living in bondage under Dictator Meles Zenawi. Asking a dictator a permission to disseminate or broadcast news conducive to the public is in fact considered disturbing the peace of Meles loyalists who live in the palace, watch television, eat the choicest food, and spend the night with the prettiest women. Do you think they care about the information the students, the teachers, the farmers, and the politicians get from the news papers, magazines, and books? If they do, they should have allowed the people, all the people, to express themselves freely; they should have encouraged their political opponents to continue to write their views against or for their government. I know “bondage” is a strong word that implies slavery. The Jews lived in bondage in Egypt for four hundred years, and the Black Americans lived in bondage for many years, and the Ethiopians are now living in bondage under a self-proclaimed Dictator Meles Zenawi. I hope one day the Ethiopian people will be free from their bondage, reclaim their greatness by breaking their servitudes and by asserting their equalities with the other free nations. Ethiopians never feel they are slaves but it is their leaders that make them feel like slaves. A country whose people are not allowed to think for themselves, to write and publish what they want, and to exchange their ideas with other people is a country of slavery. May God help such countries to overcome their servitudes and live freely!
