Video: National Bank of Ethiopia paid $10m for fake gold

February 2nd, 2008 |  |  9 Comments

Five senior executives from the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) and three chemists from the Ethiopian Geological Survey were arrested last week for their alleged involvement in a gold fraud scandal. The NBE, which exports gold, reportedly bought 300 kilograms of fake gold from a trader. The Ethiopian Geological Survey inspects any gold the NBE buys and offers quality assurance, but an official from the survey said the trader replaced real gold with the fake gold after he had received certification.

What matter is to create an efficient sytem which doesn’t allow this to happen. That is why we said Ethiopian goverment is a faild state. it has faild to create institutions that can run without police or jails. We have no personal problem, but we worried how to function as a society with patriots, trust…etc.., which social scientist called social capital. So long as Woyane is in power, belive me, we may see some buildings (physical capital) but no social capital. Take the latter as the spice of growth.

The entire Ethiopian National Bank is controlled by TPLF. I am sure the stolen gold is in the hands of Meles and Azeb Mesfin bank on off-shore account.

  4. Yinegal says:

It is not surprising. Meles government is a regime where weyanes are accumulating wealth at the expense of the poor people in the country. Vast majority of the people are unable to meet the daily requirement for subsistance. These stone-heads are making false transaction of more than $10m. This is just part of the different activities Weyanes are doing in order to drag the country backward, by reporting the country is growing at a double-digit rate.
Shame on them. Time will come where they become responsible for what they are currently doing.

This is shamefull !!! Such issues are our biggest problem. That is why we couldn’t eradicate poverty. I hope those rats will get a proportional penality. Let us think of our people who are living under the line of poverty and do our job by maintaining our decipline.

  8. Kalubicha Zerbkud says:

Fraud, forgery, and thefting are the basic characterstics of the woyanae regime. since they took matters in their stealing hands, Ethiopia will be left depeleted its resources as long as the crime family is existing.

Of coure, the real gold has already been shipped to abroad, and only the fake one is left for Ethiopia. By comparison, 10million dollar is nothing; but the big one is, what woyanae is profiting in millions of dollars every single day. This is too much!!!

Laughing Stock!! When did it start? 2005? A little before or during the “election”? Just putting pieces together.
May be it was just the get away $$$$, not the fortune stolen
And when their power was secured, they say ‘fu%% them! we can keep pulling it off And it went on and on and on….
