you are a confused brother Mr. Assta.B Gettu you sound educated yet it does not show. if you do indeed believe without a doubt that you are Africans you do not need to make any distinction especially in this causal conversation with the two proud African -Americans. most confused Ethiopian do indeed harbor that they rather be called non-0African such as Abash than proud balk people.

Assta you are absolutely right, you are Ethiopian American. The reason why the rest of black American call them selves African American is because they don’t know which African country they came from, since you know where you came from you say you are Ethiopian American.

Some times, a unique dual identity like Ethiopian-American confuses those with common and old dual identity like African-American.

One day a group of African American students asked me where I am from. I told them I am from Ethiopia. Then they said: “Why aren’t you skinny? Before I answered their second question, they asked me a third question: “Are you African American?” Ignoring their second question, I responded: “I am an Ethiopian-American.” They continued asking me: “Isn’t Ethiopia in Africa?” “Yes, Ethiopia is in East Africa,” I responded. “Then you are an African American,” they concluded. I said, “No, I am an Ethiopian American.” They left unsatisfied with my last answer. Should we stick to our Ethiopian-American identity, or do we have to join the commonly known identity – African-American since we are from Africa? Do we need some discussions on this issue?
