‘Ethiopians for Obama’ launch a web site

April 14th, 2008 |  |  7 Comments

PRESS RELEASE: Ethiopians for Obama

We have set up a new website where Ethiopian-Americans can go to a central location to find out about events that we are planning, efforts that you can take part in, and also learn a bit about your fellow Ethiopian-American compatriots.

ethiopiansforbarackobama.com has four main areas:

* The main story: The main story is the event that is planned that you can take part in. If you are wondering what event is planned, whether its a volunteer effort, a fundraising drive, or a phone banking effort, you can go to ethiopiansforbarackobama.com and find out about any event that is in the works. The main story can also be a story that is relevant to the Ethiopian-American community from a political or a socio-economic perspective

* Fund-raising goal: People have mentioned in the past that the link to our group fundraising goal did not work. That issue has been resolved. As of now, we have raised $105.00 as a group. Our goal is to raise $10,000 on line between now and the end of May. Whether you want to contribute $10.00 a month or $50.00 once, you can do so by going to the donation link at ethiopiansforbarackobama.com

* Person of the Week: Each week, a person of the week will be highlighted to show that person’s efforts to elect Senator Obama our next president as well as a bio about him/her. This week’s person of the week is Samuel Getachew. Find out his story at ethiopiansforbarackobama.com Additionally, if you would like to tell your story and why you are inspired by Barack Obama, please submit a brief bio and why you support Senator Obama–along with a picture–to theodorefikre@yahoo.com

* Hot of the Press: You will find relevant campaign information about the political process at the right side of the website. This section is updated on an hourly basis, so you will be able to find out about breaking news, news about Barack Obama, HIllary Clinton, or John McCain

* Comments: You can leave your comments at the bottom of each main story. You also have an option of forwarding the news stories to others.

As Ethiopian-Americans, it is incumbent upon us to get involved in our democratic process. Debating political issues is not enough; without voting, we will remain an inaudible noise in the land of many voices. We sacrificed to become United States citizens, we have to do our part by voting and taking part in the beautiful democracy of our country.

    Absolutely Yeees!

Ethiopians need to get active and make the world in which they live just a little bit better place for themselves and the others. That way, we will win for ourselves, for our children and grand children down the line. Influencing the course of human and natural events in our favour is a holy duty! So, please throw you token coins to Obama and simply get out and cast your votes for this great individual who thinks, speaks and looks like ourselves.

Supporting Obama is great. My question has anyone talked to him on his stance on Ethiopia. The Woyane are probably pumping money and have already a hired agent. So we need a commitment from Obama to support human rights in Ethiopia no matter what before we put our hearts and soul out for him.

Once someone gets a commitment for that from Obama, I will vote for Obama until then I will stay neutral.

Our community has been scrwed by many politicians from Chicago to Texas by duplicious and fickle politicians who are on the take by the Woyanes for money or just simple propaganda.

When it comes to foreign policy it is mostly the same whether or not a republican or a democrat has been elected to lead the country. So I don’t beleive Obama will be that different. But I am for the “movement” and willing to participate in events and rallies. I support the fund raising concept also because it is better to give money to the campaign collectively in the name of we Ethiopians instead of just contributing individually where no one knows where it comes from. Good idea and I am for it.

I agree with Dawit. Please lets not forget Democrats record when it comes to foreign policy and particularly Africa. It has not been an encouraging one. Don’t rush to jump so high when no one asks you to do just that. Show yourself some pride and stay neutral until the fog clears out(up). Otherwise, you are just bending down and bootlicking with an embarassing enthusiasm.

  7. Mestewat says:

    Folks,

Even if party politics necessarily follows party programs and party lines, we should also remember the fact that the very individual personalities, chaharcterstics, human views and world views of a charismatic leader can really shape policies, party programs and political shades.

It makes real differences if it is Hitler, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Pik Botha, Frederk de Klerk, Nelson Mandella, Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama leads a nation.

These people have different life experiences, dreams, wishes, intiations and implementation strategies to influence events in a certain given direction for humanity, aganisnt humanity or in between. The person leading is as important as the party program to be followed.

That is also why extremely taugh contests and competions take place among individual contenders aspiring for leadership in a democratic plural context. Similarly, spinless dictators cling to power and try to lead by force alone because they know that the leader can make and unmake the real course events.

Thumbs up for Obama because he is lifting the spirits and motivations of millions of people around the world even by his mere role model self confodent individual running for the world’s most powerful office on planet earth.

“It is a miracle and a dream come true.” stated a prominent veteran Afro American politician who recently defected to the Obama camp from the Clinton camp, adding, ” Why not grab the chances of a miracle unfolding infront of my own eyes?”

Even as party program and party policy, the democratic policy of the 20th century may not be exactly the same as the to be democratic policy of the dynamic and fast changing new world of the 21st century being lead by the young and the bright minds currently supporting Barack Obama in mass.

Ethiopians should jump to the bandwagon of dynamism, change and inspiration inorder to influence events in their own interests. Pessimism and always living in the past means kissing death in the mouth.
