The 11 Key Defining Characteristics Of Fascism

July 9th, 2008 |  |  8 Comments

This is to those who doubt that there is a full fledged fascism in Ethiopian currently under the Meles regime.

Forwarded to ER by Sioum Gebeyehou

Based on research by Dr. Lawrence Britt examining the fascist regimes of Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, Suharto and several Latin American regimes.

1. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of
prisoners, etc.

2. Identification of Enemies / Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

3. Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

4. Controlled Mass Media
Directly or indirectly the media is controlled by the government or by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespersons and executives.

5. Obsession with National Security
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

6. Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's
policies or actions.

7. Labor Power is Suppressed
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

8. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

9. Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

10. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

11. Fraudulent Elections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates.

    12.Meles zenawi???

Name one traditional African leader who looted his tribal treasury for deposit in Swiss banks. Said Kwame Toure (Stokely Carmichael), former founder of the Black Panther Party in the United States, “[Modern] African leaders are so corrupt that we are certain if we put dogs in uniforms and put guns on their shoulders, we'd be hard put to distinguish between them” (qtd in The Washington Post, April 8, 1998; p.D12.

  3. Temam Ahmed says:

The fact that the TPLF is a fascist organization is proven beyond a shadow of doubt. The regime of TPLF-Meles is ethno-fascist in nature and would not give up power volunarily. It will stay in power at any cost and tend to sacrifice its followers (mostly Tigres)for that matter. The fascists led by Meles Zenawi are blood thirsty and must be eliminated from the surface of Ethiopia and the world. Fascism does not accept dialogue and reconciliation and operates on the principle of control it all. Meles Zenawi has indoctrinated his Tigre followers with the fascist ideologies of ethnicity, supremacy and invincibility. That is why his followers accept and support any measures he takes including mass killings and gicing away of legal Ethiopian land.

    13-ተንኮል
    14-ቂመኝነት

    16-በራስ ያለመተማመን
    17-ኣለማወቅ{ኣዋቂ ሆኖ ለመታየት በሰሚ ሰሚ ብቻ የሰማውን ይዞ በድፍረት በማያውቀው ጉዳይ መዘባረቅ::{ቦና ፓርቲዝም ትዝ ይላል}
    18-ችኩልነት
    19-ተንበርካኪነት……

  6. Gobez says:

    12. Ethno-cnetric prejudice

This characteizes the Ethno-fascists of Abay Tigray best as it was the best tool during the extrimination of Jews in Nazi Germany. This defining charatcteristic is at work in present day Ethiopia in all aspects – political, economic, soical and cultural. To the ethno-fascist, it is all about "correcting past imbalances" or "positive discrimination". To us it is Ethno-centric fascism.

  7. Demelash says:

    This exactly portrays Meles.

The other day, he was trying to justify to the rubber stamp MPs of Ethiopian parliament the reason for augmenting the defence budget by 500 million dollars is to feed the soldiers.

He was lecturing to them that soldiers have to be fed well and were not expected to defend the country with empty stomach. Ah, his lies will never end. Adkami neger.

  8. Metasebia Desta says:

Lack of understanding on the part of some opposition forces has hampered the struggle against ethno-fascism in Ethiopia. The method of struggle these opposition forces have devised is not effective and ethno-fascism is continuing to misrule the country. Their mere presence in the country is helping the ethnofascist Meles Zenawi to reap the benefits of foreign aid and support under the pretext of building a democratic system in the country. On the domestic front, the populace is in the mood of giving up the struggle because of lack of effective opposition leadership. The opposition in the country has not even been able to save Birtukan from the jaws of ethnofascism. This shows how weak and disarrayed the opposition in the country is. The fight for the release of Birtukan and other political prisoners id the task of all Ethiopians and others standing for democracy, freedom, respect of human rights and justice.
Release the heroine of democracy and human rights, Birtukan Midekssa and all other prisoners of conscience in Ethiopia.
