Social media flooded with anti-Meles slogan

Facebook is currently being flooded with BEKA, a slogan that calls for the end of Meles Zenawi’s dictatorship in Ethiopia.

Initiated by a couple of youth groups, during the past few days hundreds of Ethiopians have changed their profile photos to posters that have the Amharic word “Beka”, which means “Enough.” The posters have different designs and colors as some of those shown here.

Two groups are also calling for a nationwide protest in Ethiopia on May 20, 2011, the 20th anniversary of Meles Zenawi in power.

  1. Why don’t those EPRP operatives help us posting these signs all over Addis, instead of putting up their party logo and something that no body from this generation understands “ehapa yilemilim.” No body from this generation really knows about EPRP, and they better not engage in efforts for brand recognition, rather than efforts to stir up opposition against Meles through those “Beka” signs.

  2. @wube I agree…

EPRP should desolve and become a memorial group for those killed by the Derg and woyana. They will never make it as a political party, all they can do is stumble others from making it like they contributed when Kenijit was in a mess.

  3. @wube, its still a good iniative. It seems to me that a lot of people are kind of afraid and this encourage the people to find creative ways of creating unity among the people to one day put an end to this Meles era.Do not underestimate the strength of a grassroots movement, even a great flood begins with a tiny raindrop.

  4. I don’t think it’s a right thing to announce the date they are going
to protest since this regime does not believe in peaceful protest and
the IDEA of announcing it may not be a good but they are Right enough
is enough actually this regime is long over due at the matter of fact
the regime adds 5 more years of stealing the ethiopian people resource
since Election 1997 it’s a sure thing BEKA means BEKA.

  5. It is admirable that Ethiopians are uniting in the diaspora under one banner to get rid of Woyanne and I hope that message is being communicated to the Ethiopian urban youth. I just hope that organizing by social media is not being pushed by the NED (the American National Endowment for Democracy). It is now coming out that some of the leaders of the Egyptian youth demonstrations were organized by the NED.

That is probaby why the demonstrations at Tahrir square have died down, even though the same system is still in power in Egypt without its head Hosni Mubarek. Notice I called what happened in Egypt as demonstrations not a revolution. A revolution doesn’t stop until all the vestiges of the regime are dismantled for good. Ethiopian youth got to know that the main bosses of Melles and Co. are western powers. Don’t get fooled, if you are to lead a movement for change it has to be done by Ethiopians and for Ethiopians.

  6. CORRECT.
    ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
I SALUTE THE PEOPLE OF ETHIOPIA FOR THEIR BRAVERY. FOR STANDING UP AGAINST MURDERERS, WHO ARE WILLING TO DO ANYTHING TO REMAIN IN POWER.

ETHIOPIA IS A PRIDE OF AFRICA. OUR FORE FATHERS FOUGHT NOT ONLY FOR POLITICAL FREEDOM OF ETHIOPIANS BUT AFRICA. AGAIN UNDER THIS BRAVE GENERATION, ETHIOPIANS WILL NOT FIGHT FOR POLITICAL FREEDOM BUT ECONOMIC FREEDOM OF ETHIOPIA AND OTHER COUNTRIES IN AFRICA. OUR AIM IS NOT ONLY TO GET RID OF MELES THE BABY KILLER BUT TO ERADICATE DISEASE, POVERTY, ILLITRACY AND DIVISION ALONG TRIBALISM, RELIGIONISM, REGIONALISM, AND LANGUAGE DIFFERENCES.

ETHIOPIA WILL SHINE AND RECLAIM ITS POSITION IN WORLD ORDER AFTER UPROOTING THE WOYANE REGIME. AMEN.

  7. i dont think it is long time to wait to may the uprising in ethiopia already start look the social media already change every one talk about how to change melese regim every one knows also will be bloodshild but i thing when the people come out on the street nothing stop them hope fully the militery stand will be part of the movement so they can save life if not we learn 2005 we will fight them like libya when it’s over it’s over.
last call for melese , “wash your hand give the power for the people”
dont forget sadam hussen most probably gadafi will be the same.

  8. Let us leave EPRP and its supporters alone and do our part. No one has a right to impose his or her organization or party on all of us. No organization is the only organization that will mobilize the Ethiopian people to topple TPLF. Those who are specializing in insulting EPRP might have a secret love for TPLF. Ethiopians are saying no to Meles’ TPLF, Beka !!!

  9. I seconded the message of #1. No lone party or organization can take a credit when such a big movement in the making. The out dated eprp should once again be reminded not to waste the people’s chance to freedom. We need a concerted effort from all stake holders so that the movement won’t be stifled by weyane’s many dirty tactics. Let BEKA spread all over the country. That is what eprp should try if it wants to have a credibility.
    wey gud

  10. Beka!

    Wube and selam!

Time to curse only woyanne and woyanne. We can suggest to eprp leadership propely. This is about unity of Ethiopians against woyanne. Hopefully the leadership of eprp noted our suggerstion to reflect the intent of ethiopians not any name of party be it G7, UDJ…… Our topic from now on should be woyanne not any oppostion party just for sake of liberation of people and ethiopia. It is only woayne who wants us to watch curse each other.

  11. How many Ethiopians have face book accounts or have internet access?
Compare that to 20 million in Egypt!
VOA, if not jammed, can reach more Ethiopians than anything that you people are dreaming here. Let’s think rather about low tech solution that can work in the Ethiopian context. Does any one have connections with Google? During the Egyptian uprising they set up call- to- twit service which converts land line calls to twits. This will be very important in our case. If we happen to have a revolution and woyane commits atrocity people can call from land line and the crime will come to light. As for the Ethiopian internet woyane will switch it off in a minute should any revolt arise in Ethiopia.

  12. I agree with Anonymous #13. What EPRP doing lately in Addis is telling the Woyane security apparatus is that even with all the thousands of Woyane agents and cadres you can not silence us we are here, the new generation of Ethiopians are as courageous as their older brothers, and they are ready to revolt against you. Any ways late us not talk what one political party is doing or not doing right now. what the people need is a well organized grass root movement that effectively encourage and help the Ethiopian people help get rid of this tribal and hateful group called Woyane.

  13. this public uprising going to be lead only by the people there should be no leader to make sure that weyane could not find any one to put prison like birtukan!!!!

  15. Enough is enough! Not TPLF, Not Toni Blair’s conspiracy will silence us. We shoud now join hands to get rid off MELES, BEREKET AND AZEB GOLLA by all means.

  16. Eprp should melt in to the people’s movement and stop advertising itself like always and come to lose like always. What is the point of individually challenging Wayane just like its previous lonesome insurrections where it has been boasting of hiding not only people but even tanks and aircrafts just to find its own self being annihilated. This is not Haile Sellassie’s or Mengistu’s era.

The other worst case scenario and strategic mistakes is to announces the date time and place to start challenging Wayane dictatorship. Why tell it before starting to do it?

Broad based, well planned and well organized but total secret preemptive and surprise onslaught is already winning half of the battle. The first strong wave if well organized can brake half of the dictator Wayane’s back bones and as such they should NEVER know the initial time, places, who and the how of the uprising.

Even after the outbreak of the uprising the entire strategy must keep dynamically changing according to the situation on the ground with out the prior knowledge of the dictatorship as much as possible.

When you don’t know Wayane’s true strategy and response tactics why should you publicly announce a priori your own action and strategies before handed unless you are seeking defeat and suffer the after effect trauma? Emotional chest pumping and rationally considered and implemented actions are not the same. Any one who carefully observes the Libyan struggle will learn a great deal more than what he or she might have learned from thousands of books, university lectures and bush engagements. The fundamental core success maker is keep building genuine new trusts and new alliances among all stake holders because ultimately that is what will and can accelerate both the original onslaught and and the subsequent sustainability of the struggle for justice for all. Under line the expression, “JUSTICE FOR ALL” if you want to involve all of the the people.

All segments of the society must genuinely feel that it is an all encompassing and an all empowering genuine drive for a genuine change.

  17. We do not have to wait untill the stickers get printed or as some of you mentioned untill the EPRP youth do the job. No it is everone’s responsiblity, young and old. We can use pencil, pen, marker, brush or whatever to write “BEKA LEWEYANE” anywhere, on light poles, walls, trees, schools, bars, restaurants, tea-rooms, shops, streets, restrooms, etc. Let them know how we despise them. And it is also risk free. We have to continue doing this untill we eradicate these woyane thugs from our country. Imagine if every anti-woyane individual writes this “BEKA LEWYANE” slogan only twice! And this will be the first step towards our revolution. Opposition parties in the free world can print bumper stckers and t-shirts with the slogan “BEKA LEWEYANE” and sell it to their supporters just to cover their costs. That would help the the slogan move forward to ignite the revolution.

  18. IMPORTANT MESSAGE: please add more Ethiopians to the event page(http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=107472902664461), ESPECIALLY FROM ETHIOPIA. All you have to do is to click on “Select Guests to Invite” which is located underneath the event profile picture. Add all the people you have on your facebook. So far 11,392 people are invited to the event and 736 people are attending the event and 9,455 people are RSVPing. The good news is many Ethiopians inside the country are joining the movement and sending private messages. Let’s keep this fire burning, we will burn Meles and his thugs with it!

  19. When I read the postings in this forum I could not help but lament the fact that it reflects the very symptoms of our problems as Ethiopians. From the inception people tend to trash the effort of others with out offering any viable path to the common goal. Does it reaaly matter who does what at this juncture in an effort to bring about change as long as it aims at the ruling mafia clique? As the saying goes, put the horse ahead of the carriage. The back biting, smearing and squabbling of opposition elements in the face the monumental task awaiting could be viewed by Woyanne as the desired effect of their unrelented effort in dividing us along ethnic, political, even class lines.Wake up and smell the Revolution.

  20. We have been waiting for this moment and it seems the storms are gathering and the day of reckoning for the Weyane Tribal-Junta is up on us. The lines are drawn, its either WEYANE or ETHIOPIA ???

There are over 70 million ETHIOPIANS under 5,000 WEYANES, Ethiopians have a choice to make, this time we have seen it how its done in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Bahrain and Yemen. We can complete the process fast and clean.

    BEKA!

  21. @Yakub Egyptian people were able to take back there government from corrupt president and government, let’s hope we do the same, Freedom is priceless and oppression is equal to justice denied and delayed.
