Woyanne-style economic growth in Ethiopia (video)

The chigaram (beggar) dictator in Ethiopia, Meles Zenawi, and his regime led by Woyanne thugs have taken the country’s economy down to a new level of poverty where Ethiopians are forced to rent newspapers to get information, as the video by CNN below shows. That’s why Ethiopians are rising up to say BEKA! (enough) to the 20-year-old vampire regime.

  1. We can talk about human-right abuses, we can talk about the lack of justice (in and out of the courtrooms), and a whole list of other issues. But to say that the govt has “taken the country’s economy down to a new level of poverty” is a little exaggerated. Between 2000 and 2010, Ethiopia’s life expectancy at birth increased by almost five years, Gross National Income per capita increased by 75 percent, and expected years of schooling increased by four years (2010 HDR report). And in terms of economics, between 2001 and 2009, the average GDP growth rate was 8% annually (World Bank Report 2009). It’s always better to stick to facts. Yes to freedom of expression!!!

  2. Woyane is telling the world Ethiopia’s economy is grwoing 15% and Ethiopians are unable to buy newspaper but they rent it for a short period to chew on what’s going on. The reality of life in Ethiopia.

  3. So let me ask you this what is fact? My friend you need help because you are sick. See yourself where the country is. 2nd from the last in the world poverty measures compared to all. Do not think and try to mis lead people that if the world Bank said so then it is fact or if WOYANE said so then Ethiopia is developing. Just call your family or friends and they will give you the unbiased current country status which will shock you to death (That is why I advised you to see a medical help first). It is shocking and it must be stopped now or never. BEQA is promisssing to bring these thugs and thives to justice.

  4. Guest,

How much did Melles pay you to to write bogus statistics? Ethiopia under Woyanne has the lowest human development index in the world. There are real depressing facts Woyanne wants to hide but these facts can’t stay hidden forever. I just learned that 48% of Amhara region inhabitants have glaucoma yet Woyanne and their minions are busy hiding these facts let alone do something to aleviate the suffering of the people. If the rampant case of glaucoma stays unaddressed within the next 10 up to 50% of the inhabitants of Amhara region could go blind. I hope the Ethiopian people get rid of Woyanne sooner than later so they can pull up their sleeves and address the real development problems in their country.

  5. Hi Mr/Ms guest (#1 above)

You were quick to rattle off all the growth indicies but left out one major factor. Income distribution in present day Ethiopia is highly skewed. One is either filthy rich or dirt poor. There is no middle class so to speak off. Thus a lot of people who otherwise would have afforded to buy a newspaper or two are resorting to renting newspapers. The choice is between buying a newspaper or eating one meal a day. What good is an 11% growth unless there is a qualitative improvement in the lives of the population? Don’t forget all the growth statistics you rattled off are self reported. For the most part it is the government’s figures that find their way into the publication you mentioned on your comment.Don’t be naive enough to take it at face value.

  6. Eritreawi #4,
I just wonder if you are really Eritreawi because if you really were, then you and I have a lot to worry about our beloved country which is going downhill eversince the blood sucker dictator initiated a devastating war that resulted a huge loss of lives and destruction of incalculable amount of property.
Our little nation and once proud people are not lucky enough to be ruled by a psychopatic dictator who betrayed the nation that loved him most, turning their vision into a nightmare. Our people have been through all kinds of an unimaginable and immeasurable atrocities committed by a group of shiftas who claim to be our own.The mistreatment of our people by the shiftas is far worse than all its predecessors combined and probably equivalent to ‘Giz-at Turky’.
Today Eritrea is a nation where 90%of its youth pinned down in a fox hole for 15 years where there is no enemy in sight,
-Its a nation where there is no functional parliament, free press and civic associations.
-Its the only nation in the world where its youth flee to the neighbouring countries in a record never seen before.I am sure you heard what is happening in the Sahara, Sinai and the deep sea.About 325 Eritreans were drowned in the deep sea a week ago and one of the victims was a mother with her 4 children.TOO SAD
-Its a nation where imprisoned citizens are left to rot behind bars.A case in point, parlamenterians, journalists, ministers and sinior commanders were imprisoned in 2001 with out the due process of the law and they were left to die. Most of them died without making it to the doorsteps of a court.
-Its a nation where its citizens subjected for imprisonment, arbitrary killings, rape and disappearances. To sum it up the crimes of the ruling junta are too many and too long to list.
We Eritreans have all these in our plate today and its our historical responsibility to address them before we are disappeared as a nation and people off the map.
Ethiopia and its people in my humble oppinion are in a much better position than ever before and I believe Ethiopians can take care of their issues in their own.Your help in demonizing their gov’t and your interference in their affairs is not appreciated.Your HELP though is much needed NOW in saving Eritrea before it disappears in front of our eyes.
    Ezi Wedhanka,
    Death to dictatorship,
    Democracy and Justice will prevail,

I AGREE THE GAME IS OVER AND WOYANE MUST GO!

  8. I was back home a month ago. I have seen people renting a newspaper for 2.00 birr to read. I asked the salesman how it cost me if I want to buy he replied 25.00 birr. The price on the newspaper was 5.00 birr. The people may afford 5.00birr but no way 25.00birr. They are unemployed youth looking for job adverisements, how can they afford 25.00birr?

  9. Manu,

I completely agree with you about the income distribution. I didn’t say the situation is looking rosy, far from it, I just said let’s temper the exaggeration because whether you like it or not, Ethiopia’s Human Development indicators have improved over the last 20 years.

    SHASHEMENE,

Pointing out reports from the 2010 UNDP HDR report and World Bank 2009 report does not make me sick. I hope,as Ethiopians, we can one day be able to make suggestions, present different points, and disagree without calling each other names.

    Eritreawi

Ethiopia ranks 157th out of 169 countries (Zimbabwe has the lowest HDI in the world not Ethiopia). Again, let us temper the exaggeration.

  10. Well, Ethiopia is not alone when it comes to a few uninformed, ignorant and greedy thugs. The disgraced Egyptian and Tunisian dictators had a few thugs too that supported them regardless it’s widely reported that they had robbed and killed innocent Egyptians and Tunisians. But in the end, thank God justice prevailed.
Woyans don’t want people to get informed. I bet News Papers and other things don’t cost that much in Mekelle. Hard to believe, the same people who complained about and criticized the late Haile Selassae and Mengestu, and promised to bring freedom and justice for all Ethiopians are found to be immeasurably cruel than Haile Selassae and the other blood sucker Mengestu put together for the last twenty years. The only group of people who are still supporting the TPLF regime are the members of the TPLF themselves and the few hodams and the uninformed ignorant Ethiopians like Solomon Tengarawe. Meles is the worst as they come. Besides robbing the country, torturing and killing Ethiopians, Meles has removed Ethiopians from their homes, the culture and life style they enjoyed for thousands of years and sold their land to some billionaires who wouldn’t care what happens to Ethiopians psychologically for loosing their land and the sickness that is going to follow in a few years from the deadly fertilizers and pesticides. Only thugs support a deadly regime that have robbed, killed and sell the most fertile lands of Ethiopia.

  11. The GDP figures reported are superficial as these numbers do not tell the true tails regarding the state of Ethiopia’s economy. Many subject matter experts have debunked TPLF’s GDP postulation time and again.

As “context” is important, one ought to look at such GDP numbers within the context of the abysmal economic realities on the ground and the atrophic impacts of TPLF’s policies and politics on various element of the economy. Some of the economic realities of the country:
    • Extreme poverty–the country remains to be among the poor of the poor
    • Millions of unemployed young minds and experienced adults
    • Lack of sustainable and adequate progress towards meeting the “basics needs” of the people
    • Health services, educational systems, etc… are in shambles
    • Inequitable wealth and income distribution — the looting factor

And, without foreign aid money (in billions), what would be the state of an economy that is already in shambles? How is foreign aid money (in billions) affecting the economy and GDP figures?

The economic realities on the ground cannot be reconciled with the professed GDP growth.

Ethiopia has imaginative and hardworking people with great minds. The country has immense potentials to become one of the most bustling economy and a powerhouses in the region — unfortunately, these potentials are suppress by incompetence and the heinous policies the regime has imposed on Ethiopians for the last 20 years.

The GDP growth figure reported is smoke and mirrors.

    Zeleke A.
