Remember that EPLF fighters had already liberated 99.9% of Eritrea and Derg soldiers in Asmara were deserting in droves most of them giving up fighting. So for all intents and purposes, EPLF had already defeated the Derg army before our fighters entered Addis. That country was land-locked for most of its history. So what is the problem? The other part of your comment I disagree is where you said that our people are impoverished because of that. The fact is that they are not impoverished but are getting out of poverty by the hour and they will join the middle income people by 2025. No one can deny the fact that Meles is confronted with life threatening ailments. Equally true is that he is roaming the European and Middle Eastern world in search of treatment. This no doubt is because his doctors in Ethiopia have considered his case beyond their capabilities. What the European and Middle Eastern medical facilities can do to save him remains unknown.

It is public secret that Meles has passed out on several occasions due to the “Autonomic Neuropathy” he was suffering from for several years. Physicians suggest that the new ailment which contributed to his current speedy deterioration must be some kind of malignancy. His health issue is not limited to these two very serious problems. Therefore, given the multitude ailments challenging his life, the days of Meles may indeed be very limited.

The possibility of his sudden demise has preoccupied many Ethiopian minds. This obviously is out of love for their country and concern for its future. Though Meles and company have formally declared Ethiopia an ethnic federal democracy, what prevails on the ground is a very centralized one-party state. Many Ethiopian scholars rightly argue that it is not a one-party but a one-man dictatorship. The structure of this dictatorship is further compounded by its accompanying ethnic complexities.

Given these, should the debate not focus more on the the courses of action to be taken by the Ethiopian people following the dictator’s demise?

A few days after Meles’s ghostly appearance and disappearance there was a night storm that has not been seen in many years in addis ababa and many parts of the country. It was a scary night ghostly wind blowing on all directions and buildings shivering like crazy. The next day people were talking about such storm happening only when a ruler of a country dies.
