I have been to Ethiopia a numerous times already, being involved in a gospel literature program based in the Piassa, Addis Ababa. I know excatly what you are describing, being a passenger on those roads. I have cringed so many times in trying to figure out what those oncoming vehicles meant by flashing their headlights. Did they mean go or don't do it or what?? And if you are following a lumbering smoking truck on a hill and can't see for passing and then the truck puts on his left turn signal, a sign that it is clear to pass. Once I figured that one out I wouldn'y panic anymore if the driver took off through the dust around the truck. Not to mention their prevailing habit of hugging the left side of the road on blind left curves..... Diving on the center of road lines....... etc
In spite of it all I love Ethiopia, the land of thirteen month's of sunshine. (I too have spent a night in Shashemene, and have been to Awassa 4 or 5 times.
Hope you have a good trip to Lilabela. I've never benn up north.

thanks again. It is fun to read and is full of interesting insights. I loved your description of acacia tree with its top 'flattened as if the sky was a heavy weight pushing it down'. Perfect description. They drive like that in Mexico too, except the roads are a little better. Until I got used to it It was freaky the chances they take. How about telling us about your interactions with the people? take care my friend.
