ONLF statement on expulsion of ICRC and media ban in Ogaden

July 25th, 2007 |  |  4 Comments

Press Release

The expulsion of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) giving them only a weeks notice to leave Ogaden coupled with the ban on international journalists is designed to prevent any international organization or foreign correspondent from witnessing the war crimes taking place against the civilian population of Ogaden at the hands of the Meles regime in Ethiopia. The Meles regime has clearly recognized the failure of its military strategy in Ogaden and has set its sights on our civilian population.

The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) strongly condemns the expulsion of the ICRC and the ban on international journalists from entering Ogaden. We call on the world community to recognize that war crimes are taking place in Ogaden against our people requiring immediate international intervention. The Meles regime’s war crimes have targeted civilians in Ogaden and have done little to impact our armed forces which are largely intact, operational and and continue to be effective.

The ONLF wishes to reaffirm that humanitarian assistance continues to face direct interference from the Meles regime and that there continues to be a virtual blockade against aid and commercial goods in Ogaden. Humanitarian organizations like the WFP are unable to be fully effective because of restrictions imposed by this regime. This blockade coupled with the information blockade now in effect and strengthened by the expulsion of the ICRC should serve as a warning sign to the international community that the Ethiopian regime has no intention of ending its war crimes in Ogaden and will make every effort to conceal these atrocities from the world community.

The United Nations must not sit by idly and allow yet another preventable human tragedy to take place in Africa.

  1. Ahmed Hassan says:

Condemn and publicly expose the atrocities these Tigre wolves commit to the innocent and vulnerable. Publicise their smelling and disgusting tactics. Tell the world the real face of Meles and his gang.

However keep in mind the more they kill, the more they maime, the more they destroy and the more they humiliate our people, the more freedom fighters they enlist for us. Do not confine your struggle in Ogaden, seek help from other colonised Ethiopian nationalities. Coordinate with the Oromos, Sidamos,Hararis, Anfars, Southern Nationalities, Moslems, Christains and Pagans. Seek help from those Somalis that are colonized in their home country. Do not kill the innocent civilians and never destroy properties, do not wage unnecessary war against people of other faith. There are millions of christains that suffer as you do under Meles and his power addicted maniacs. To them any free loving humanbeign is their enemy, regardless of religion and nationality.

Finally you will succeed, for you are fighting for your rights and nothing more. The International community are well aware your long and historical struggle. They are well aware in Capitol Hill and in westminister, your war is never related to terror wars. However, Meles try to sell Islamic phobia that prevails in current political environs, yours is well known. World Media from CNN, Washington Post, NY Times, Times of London and the Guardian expose daily and weekly the atrocities committed against Somalis in Ogaden region of Ethiopia.

Trust your strength and uphold your desire for freedom.

  2. see says:

When Woyane come to power it made a deliberate target of its own people to win the support of the people and International community. Eg Many Dergu supporters argue that Hawzen and Mersa are deliberate mis informed targets to show the ugly face of the regime. This might have worked during that time.

I guess ONLf is still proud to kill Chinnese and Civilians. Now ONLF is a clear target Chinese, American and Europeans will not support it. ONLF must have planned it carefully. Now the world will keep the mouth shut because ONLF started it, at least the ugly face of incuding civilians.
