Gondar or Gonder (Ge'ez: ጎንደር Gōnder, older ጐንደር Gʷandar, modern pronunciation Gʷender) is a city in northern Ethiopia, which was once the old imperial capital and capital of the historic Begemder province. As a result, the old province of Begemder is sometimes referred to as Gondar. Located in the Semien Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region, Gondar is north of Lake Tana on the Lesser Angereb River and southwest of the Simien Mountains. The city has a latitude and longitude of 12°36′N 37°28′E / 12.6, 37.467 with an elevation of 2133 meters above sea level.

Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, Gondar has an estimated total population of 194,773 of whom 97,625 were males and 97,148 were females. The woreda has an estimated area of 40.27 square kilometers, which gives Gondar a density of 4,836.70 people per square kilometer.[1] The 1994 census reported this city had a total population of 112,249 of whom 51,366 were males and 60,883 were females. – Wikipedia.org

The mountains in the background is breath-taking. If it was not for Meles, Gonder would have been one of tourist attraction places for its natural beauty and mountain climbers around the world. Our country, Ethiopia is not lacking natural beauty. What is lacking is a great leader.

That is my hometown. The beautiful city of Gondar where I lived most of my life. Frow Jon Tekel warkaw to Fasile castle to Angereb high school to Ediget Feleg Secondary and elementary school to Fasiledes comrehensive to Fasiledes Midddle school. One of the greatest people of the world. what more can I say? They share what they have despite their greedy leaders. Their respect for guests is second to none. The most beautiful place in the world. Where ever I go wether Saint Louis city or New York city, or Addis Ababa whether I acccumlate thousands of dollars, whether I eat the best food in the world, there is nothing like the city of Gondar and the home grown food they serve. Thank you for posting it. It's been a 10 years since I have not seen the city. Thank you again.

    Hi Guys!!
I am Gonderie and at the same time I am an Ethiopian.I think it is not to be narrow mindness but I want to say that Gonder is my root. It is in Gonder that I was born, grown up and attended my education up to 12th grade. It is about 17 years since I missed the warm feelings of its people. Now thanks to woyane Gonder is becoming smaller from year to year. You know what I mean:part of it was taken to the Tigray side and part of it was sold to a foreign country(Sudan).Ethiopians!! United we satnd we shall…..
