I found your piece re Seye Abraham quite interesting and worth responding to. I suggest that the issue of persons like Seye Abraham should be treated in a systematic manner i.e. determine whether they are symptomatic of a genuine transformation from being tribalist/dictatorial/anti-unity, etc. to the state of mind that really accepts democracy, respect for human rights and rule of law, unity, etc.
Therefore, while I agree with your assessment of Seye's past misdeeds, I suggest that Seye's case should be treated as an example of how people like him and Gebru Asrat should be treated.

I believe that when accomplices of Melles and company recognize their mistakes and decide to change to something more in line with the genuine interests of the Ethiopian people, the right response should be to think along the lines of setting clear criteria for determining whether they are foxes in sheep's clothing or whether they are for real. Condemning and castigating them as Elias has done is, as someone has already stated, a tactical mistake as it may alienate those who may genuinely jump from Meles' ship of disaster.

In the case of Seye, the following should be the criteria he should be required to meet if he has any hope of being forgiven for all the crimes he has committed against the Ethiopian people:

1. Is he prepared to go down on his knees and beg for forgiveness of the Ethiopian people for having been an accomplice with Melles & company in making Ethiopia a landlocked country; for the disastrous results of the totally useless war against Eritrea; for his dismissal of numerous competent and professional employees in Ethiopian Airlines simply because they were not Tigreyans; for the corruption perpetrated by TPLF companies which he helped establish; for dismantling the Ethiopian defense forces including the navy; etc. etc. etc. etc.?

2. Does he renounce the socialist land tenure system which he helped institute in order to abuse the Ethiopian as a serf or a slave?

3. Does he reject Article 39 of the constitution which he and Melles' cohorts introduced, as enemies of Ethiopia, in order to continue dismantling the nation?

4. Is he now opposed to the disastrous ethnic policy which he and his friends introduced to divide and rule the country?

5. Does he recognize his responsibility for Ethiopia's continued abject poverty despite his party having been in power for 17 years: Eth. is 170th out of 177 countries in UNDP's Human Development Index?

6. Does he now reject the fact that his party's name is still ….Liberation Front? Liberation from what? Does Seye believe in Ethiopia's unity?

7. Does Seye accept that those responsible for the murder of 198 Ethiopians following the May '05 elections should be brought to justice?

Whether Seye should be accepted into the fold or whether he should be treated as a criminal should depend on his response to the above and similar specific questions.

Who is Siye? It sounds familiar. Is he the criminal who was the leader of that gang called TPLF? That man was brutal and arrogant who massacred all his life and mainly during his brief power grip. He killed many oromos saying " olf members yedemesessalu" and the >120000 innocent, mostly teenagers, who disappeared in badme. He was enriching himself during those times. Luckily, this man's righn was over during the early part of his career. He had already the opportunity to make a difference in democracy while he was in power. But he abused it. Now he is begging for another power? He joined TPLF to liberate tigray from "amara gezhe medeb". Now he can also re-liberate tigray from "tigray gezhe medeb".His cousins in the north could buy his lies, but not us. We don't need him. This man is criminal. Please don't mention him here anymore. He is a waste of time. Discuss other important things.

"The purpose is to undermine the proper functioning of the established order through the withdrawal of cooperation and consent."
Messay,
Yo are leaving in the US, a democratic country where your peaceful means might work. Not in Ethiopia, not in Eritrea, not in Africa. Wake up man, this is not a dissertation on Aristotle, this is reality and peaceful protest on just a dream.
Ethiopian history is full of peaceful protest and so many students and civilians have sacrificed their lives. Stop dreaming

Sye a war hero? Give me a break. This guy was one of the architects who worked so hard to divide our country into ethnic lines so that his Tygrayan groups will have the political and economic dominance over the rest of the people. Now he is trying to look and act like a true Ethiopian. When the time comes him and his criminal tplf gangs will be brought to justice for the worst crimes commited against our beloved country in the history of it's existence. If he thinks the Ethiopian people will forget what he has done to harm the country and give him a second chance, he is just fooling himself. Regarding the time he served in the past, it has nothing to do with the Ethiopian people. It is between him and his masters due to disagreements over the loot. Once a theif is always a theif.

Although I would like to say some what this guy, Seye, finally realized the dangerous road map they brought to Addis from the jungle of aiga is nothing but undemocractic, short sighted, and above all YugoEthiopianism the damages they inflicted to this beautiful nation and people are a long lasting; especially if Legesse Z and his traitor Eritreans masters/advisors continue to rule the country by the barrel of the gun. Seye, may also need to answer another important quetion: WHY DID YOU SLAUGHTER 153,000 INNOCENT ETHIOPIAN CHILDREN AND CREATED SO MUCH ENEMITY TO BOOST YOUR INDIVIDUAL EGO?

Selam
I admire the analysis of Dr. Mesay. Although I have no admiration for what Seye has tried express I respect Dr. Messay's feeling towards Seye. For me Seye is then hero of TPLF who had fought tooth and nail to establish the current governance in Ethiopia. If Seye had genuinely fled his home as a rebel and freedom fighter, History had already had given him a chance to pave a way for democracy, peace and development of the destitute people of Ethiopia. However, maliciously Seye and his comrades have chosen other direction. Several years after the damage has deeply hurt that country, Seye has no morale ground to preach us how we can achieve democracy in Ethiopia. Moreover, my heart bled to see a highly regarded intellectual wasting his precious time and ours to digest a crude politically motivated propaganda.
Moreover, I vehemently oppose both Seye and Messy that they blame on the political movements of the 60 for the problem we currently facing in the opposition and the ruling party. Those leaders of the 60 had paid enormous sacrifice and liberated the toiling class of Ethiopia from the brutal feudal system. Many of us failed them by not raising their banners and lead the upcoming generation to the right direction. We have passed the past 40 years condemning the leaders of the movements of the sixties. I presume that is unfair judgment and let us leave the judgment for history.
Besides, I would have preferred Dr. Messay analyze the current political situation and give his opinion rather than use Seye's politically motivated propaganda as a pretext. Any way I like the conclusion of Dr.Messay's opinion.

The Disrespect of former TPLF thugs is unimaginable. To ask General Seye, Why he is afraid of Arm struggle while he was the one who made 120,000 non- Tigrian Ethiopians perish in the desert of Assab and Badme while him and his family collect commissions from every Arm sale they purchased from former USSR countries. How come the lives of Ethiopians become precious to you when we stand and pickup the gun to fight TPLF? What do they think we are? Fools? Mr Seye i don't blame you to play any card you got now b/c when the time comes..... may God be with you. I am sure you will join your friends,TPLF, as we all know you never left them. Birtukan is your back door to power, why not ask Meles to release her, lol.
Go G7.

Dr. Mesay

As far as I know a philosopher is an individual who gives his neck for truth. Whenever I read your article you remind me "Mehal Sefari" politician. Now you are discussing rubbish with a criminal man called Seye Abraha, who killed thousands of our people in Bendeno, Arba Gugu and Arsi negele.

It is simply mind boggling to bring "SEYE ABRAHA" in the dialogue of the future Ethiopia. SEYE for all practical purposes is a murderous criminal who committed countless crime against the Ethiopian people - who has to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law in a human rights court - anything less is unacceptable much less responding to his continuous ranting.

"SEYE ABRAHA" and "GEBRU ASRAT" both of whom ctriminals are being rehabilitated by a concerted effort of the web site managed by none other than "ABRAHA BELAY". The "ETHIOMEDIA" web site is a web based disinformation medium similar to the "REPORTER" news paper run by woyane disgruntled criminals.

Ethiomedia and his double speak moderator, Abraha Belay are waging character assasination against patriotic Ethiopians, including Elias Kifle.

The “ETHIOMEDIA” web site is a web based disinformation medium similar to the “REPORTER” news paper run by woyane disgruntled criminals.

Ethiomedia and his double speak moderator, Abraha Belay are waging character assasination against patriotic Ethiopians, including Elias Kifle.

As usual, Dr. Messay's well articulated and penetrating article hits its mark once again. What this article and similar ones like it have conveyed is that ethnic politics is deeply ingrained in all TPLF members (current or former). At this juncture of the struggle, every genuine Ethiopian should ponder or examine the sincerity of former TPLF members such as Seye Abraha. What is amazing and and equally perplexing is the shameless pontification of these ethnicists and criminals running around to get into the middle of the struggle with their bloody hands still in full view (....of course Seye, Gebru, Aregawi, etc. being at the forefront).

My personal view is never trust a former TPLF member to join the struggle and/or embrace them in our midst before they wash their bloody hands or come clean with their past. Every Ethiopian knows that their main contention with Meles and the ruling junta is internal power struggle. When it comes to Ethiopia they have little or no difference.

Anyway, another good article by Dr. Messay!
