It is a way forward. Ginbot 7 first needs to extend its reach to various factions (like ONLF, OLF and others) before the establishing the exile government. It should also show that it has a big support from various groups using large demonstrations of the Diaspora.

“A transitional government in exile is the way to go” is a good proposal to consider; however, isn’t Ginbot 7, whose president is Dr. Berhanu Nega, also a government in exile? Does it make any difference to create a new government in exile rather than to encourage and support the existing one – Ginbot 7? If Ginbot 7 is not yet embraced by most people in the diaspora and at home, isn’t it time to declare Ginbot 7 as a legitimate government in Exile?

By the way, do we have any proof that government in exile will work and be able to change the existing Woyanne government in Ethiopia?

The government of Ethiopia during Emperor Haile Selassie was in exile for five years, and after five years, it was restored to the King by the help of the British people. This remarkable event was accomplished for three factors: (1) while the King was in exile, he was tirelessly working, applying to the world leaders to help him denounce Italy as an aggressor; (2) the world was fighting against Hitler and Mussolini, and Mussolini was regarded by most of the leaders of the world as a fascist and as an adventurer; and (3) most Ethiopian patriots were fighting against Mussolini for five years. These three important factors helped the exiled King to come back and inter Addis Ababa triumphantly.

The Polish government had been in exile from 1939 to 1990, and finally it was restored when the Soviet Union collapsed; however, the government of Tibet is still in exile, and Dali Lama many never go back to Tibet and restore his government.

These three governments mentioned above had been tested in their own respective countries, and some of them were able to come back from their exiles and establish their former status; others like the Tibetan government have not been that much lucky.

At least for some times, Dr. Nega had served his country and many Ethiopians are now familiar with his name and his popularity. To me, Dr. Nega would be the ideal person to run the government in exile.

Nevertheless, we should have a debate on this issue: Is it essential to create a new government in exile or should we declare Ginbot 7 as a legitimate government in exile? After we have solved this crucial issue, then we should consider the next issue: Should we have to elect a new president for the new government in exile, or should we have to ask Dr. Nega to be the president of the new government in exile?

We remember that Emperor Amaha Selassie, the son of Emperor Haile Selassie, lived in exile for many years and could not win the hearts of the Ethiopian people, so he died in exile without seeing his country again.

To be effective, the transitional government in exile must have enough support from the United States government, the European Union, the Eritrean government, and from the other East African states. More than these, it needs thousands of Ethiopian patriots fighting the Woyanne regime from every corner of the country.

Finally, the transitional government in exile will certainly succeed if it inspires the hearts and minds of the Tigrean army, the common people of Ethiopia, and especially the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church clergies, monks, deacons, the Ethiopian Jewish Rabies, and the Ethiopian Muslim Imams. Without them, there will be no easy victory at all, so let us convince them and bring them to our side, and “If God is on our side, who is against us?”
