Skype and Ethiopia
By Yilma Bekele | June 23, 2012

There are over eighty million Ethiopians. As of 2012 there are about a million fixed line service users and close to three million mobile users in Ethiopia. It is the lowest teledensity in Africa. There are less than half a million Internet users in Ethiopia and that is in the bottom even for Africa. That number constitutes .06% of the Ethiopian population.

Why is the Ethiopian government enacting such draconian law when you can clearly see Internet does not play any major role in the life of the citizen? Why is the government becoming the laughing stock of the planet by equating phone usage to committing murder? All indications are the issue is not about Skype or Tor but it is all about control and bullying into submission. It is all about instilling fear. Fear is the main currency of a dictator. They are not worried about the .06% but they are very much interested in showing the ninety nine percent who exactly is in charge. In your face is how they like to operate. They are saying we can do anything we want and tough luck there is nothing you can do about it!

Ethiopia: Mekele-Woldia 1.6 billion dollar rail construction
Mekele-Woldia 1.6 billion dollar rail construction and the postponing of Meles’s Award Ceremony
by Muse Abebe
In the last two days there has been some news article that has been published on TPLF mouth piece, Radio Fana. One ofthe news states that an agreement has been made between the Ethiopian Train Corporation and Chinese CCCC for the construction of train line that extends from the city of Mekele to Woldia, in North Wollo. It is necessary to mention the claim of TPLF that reiterates all the region north of the city of Woldia to be part of Tigray and this has been included in the map made by TPLF in 1976. The construction of the line costs 1.6 billion dollar and this is part of the train rail that extends to Tajura. The agreement was mad between Ethiopia’s Train Corporation chief Dr. Getachew Mengistu and chief of CCCC. According to the mayor of Mekele, the train line will contribute a lot in terms of exporting ‘huge resources’ in Tigray.

Ethiopian Kangaroo Court finds 24 guilty of terrorism

by Jenny Vaughan (AFP)

ADDIS ABABA — Twenty-four Ethiopians, including a leading opposition figure and a prominent journalist, faced life Twenty-four Ethiopians, including a leading opposition figure and a prominent journalist, faced life in prisonin prison Wednesday after a court found them guilty on charges of terrorism.

“Guilty as charged,” judge Endeshaw Adane said, referring to journalist Eskinder Nega, opposition member Andualem Arage and 22 others accused of links to US-based group Ginbot 7, considered a terrorist group under Ethiopian law, and other outlawed groups.

Under the anti-terrorism legislation, the defendants face the death sentence, but the prosecutor recommended life sentences for the 24, only eight of whom were present in court.

Both Eskinder and Andualem were found guilty of “participation in a terrorist organisation” and “planning, preparation, conspiracy, incitement and attempt of (a) terrorist act.”

Andualem was also found guilty of serving as a “leader or decision maker of a terrorist organisation.” Another less prominent opposition member was also among the group convicted Wednesday.

Endeshaw said Eskinder abused his freedom of speech and accused him of threatening national security.

“Freedom of speech can be limited when it used to undermine security and not used for the public interest,” he said.

Both Eskinder and Andualem are accused of using examples of Arab Spring uprisings in the media to promote anti-government protest in Ethiopia.

“There is no way other than democratic elections to attain power in the country, and what they said is clearly against the constitution,” Endeshaw said.

“By using the freedom of speech recognized in the constitution these criminals have been trying to destabilize the country… that is why the court should give a grave sentence,” the prosecutor said.

Five of the defendants, including Eskinder and Andualem, will reappear in court on July 13 to present their mitigating circumstances.

Rights group Amnesty International condemned the verdict, and said the men were found guilty on “trumped up” charges.

“This is a dark day for justice in Ethiopia, where freedom of expression is being systematically destroyed by a government targeting any dissenting voice,” Amnesty’s Africa researcher Claire Beston, said in a statement.

Amnesty said the convicted were prisoners of conscience and said “the verdict seemed to be a foregone conclusion.” The group called for the immediate release of the prisoners.

Andualem, who appeared in court in a suit and tie, tried to present his own mitigating circumstances to the judges.

“I have struggled for peaceful democracy, and I have never disrespected any individual and I didn’t commit a crime. My conscience is clear,” he said.

The judge promptly silenced him and said he was not following the court’s procedure.

Eskinder insisted he deserved to speak since he is facing a serious sentence.

“You have to stand for justice, you have to allow us to say what we want… you have no right to limit our freedom of speech,” he said to the judges.

The courtroom was filled with family members, journalists and diplomats, including US Ambassador Donald Booth.

Hard core tplf weyane monkeys, I am sure you are happy with the verdict. Belay and Ym - Do you have any comment? Please don't be shy.

Ethiopia: Conviction of government opponents a ‘dark day’ for freedom of expression

This is a dark day for justice in Ethiopia, where freedom of expression is being systematically destroyed by a government targeting any dissenting voice

Claire Beston, Amnesty International’s Ethiopia researcher.

More Ethiopian government opponents have been convicted on trumped up terrorism and treason charges in what Ethiopia: Conviction of government opponents a 'dark day' for freedom of expressionAmnesty International called “a dark day” for freedom of expression.

Iconic dissident journalist Eskinder Nega and leading members of the political opposition, Andualem Arage and Nathnael Mekonnen, along with five other men, were found guilty on charges of “terrorist acts, “encouragement of terrorism”, “high treason” and several other charges.

A further 16 men were found guilty in absentia, including several journalists and one human rights activist. The verdict follows the conviction of five dissidents on similar charges in January.

“This is a dark day for justice in Ethiopia, where freedom of expression is being systematically destroyed by a government targeting any dissenting voice,” said Claire Beston, Amnesty International’s Ethiopia researcher.

“We believe that Eskinder, Andualem and Nathnael are prisoners of conscience – convicted because of their legitimate and peaceful activities, and particularly for advocating peaceful protest against the government. They should be immediately and unconditionally released.”

The trial was marred by serious irregularities, including allegations of torture made by at least one defendant, which were not investigated.

Statements by the Prime Minister and programmes aired on state TV pronouncing the guilt of the defendants violated their right to be presumed innocent and exerted significant political pressure on the court.

Ethiopia’s Anti-Terrorism Proclamation, used to convict the defendants on several of the charges, enables the prosecution of legitimate and peaceful activities as ‘terrorist’ acts.

“We believe the defendants did not receive a fair trial,” said Beston. “The verdict seemed to be a foregone conclusion.”

“Evidence presented against Eskinder, Andualem and Nathnael did not demonstrate criminal wrongdoing, instead much of the evidence showed their peaceful and legitimate activities.”

Several pieces of evidence against Eskinder, a journalist who won this year’s prestigious PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award, centred on his discussion of whether last year’s Middle East and North Africa uprisings could spread to Ethiopia.

A key part of the evidence against Eskinder and Andualem were impassioned speeches they had made at a public meeting about Ethiopians’ need to struggle peacefully for freedom.

Another defendant, Kinfemichael Debebe, made a speech at the same meeting and may also have been targeted exercising his right to freedom of expression.

Amnesty International does not have full details of the activities and political affiliations of the other defendants in the case, largely due to the authorities’ tight control of information dissemination.

However, the flaws in the trial alone make their convictions unsound. Those defendants should be retried in a fair trial, or released.

Wednesday’s verdict is the latest example of the Ethiopian authorities’ ruthless crackdown on freedom of expression.

It echoes the conviction of five dissidents, including three journalists and an opposition leader, given lengthy prison terms in January, also under the Anti-Terror Law and Criminal Code.

Both trials appear to have been motivated, at least in part, by the government’s fear of popular protests breaking out.

“The government is not distinguishing between peaceful calls for reform and terrorist activities. In both trials, freedom of expression has been criminalised. The government is outlawing the legitimate activity of journalists and opposition members,” said Beston.

Attacks on freedom of expression also persisted outside the courtroom. In November, one of the last independent publications was forced to shut down and its editor fled the country after being threatened with arrest.

In late April, the editor of one of the country’s only remaining independent newspapers was fined 2,000 Ethiopian Birr (about US $115) accused of “biased coverage” of the trial, after the paper published defendants’ statements.

A few days later, the government activated a legal directive that compels printers to censor the content of the newspapers and publications they print.

Printing firms are now obliged to remove any content that may be defined as illegal or problematic by the government. The same broad definitions of the anti-terror legislation mean that much legitimate subject matter could fall into this category.

“This move towards self-censorship is a further chilling example of the Ethiopian government’s determination to stamp out any criticism or independent commentary of its actions,” said Beston.

“The authorities are ensuring it is not possible for the people of Ethiopia to either hear or express dissent.”

US Sen. Patrick Leahy suggests cutback in aid to Ethiopia
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The Christian Science Monitor

Dissident Ethiopian writer Eskinder Nega was today convicted of conspiring to commit acts of terror, sparking an

U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy
outpouring of international condemnation.

The eloquent, long-standing critic of the Ethiopia Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front’s rule – who has also been jailed at least seven times – was awarded the PEN American Center Freedom to Write prize last month. PEN called today’s verdict demonstrated a “shameful disdain for Ethiopia’s obligations to its citizens and to international law.”

Judges at the Federal High Court found Mr. Eskinder – along with 23 other activists and writers – guilty of being involved in plotting a violent revolt. Supporters say his actual crime was voicing pro-democracy views and discussing the possibility of peaceful protests in the wake of the Arab Spring.

Supporters include US Sen. Patrick Leahy (D) of Vermont, who wants at least $500,000 of existing American aid to Ethiopia’s military next year to be potentially withheld, depending on whether the Ethiopian government respects press freedom.

“That means enabling journalists like Eskinder Nega to do their work of reporting and peaceful political participation,” he said in a congressional statement on June 14.

The conditions in the bill, expected to become law, also press Ethiopia to protect judicial independence and a host of other human rights.

Despite these moves, Eskinder’s conviction is just one indication that there will be little change of course from Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s government, which relies heavily on up to $3 billion of Western aid a year in its much-lauded mission to improve health and education.

“The net result of the legislation’s passage would be to annoy the current Ethiopian government without really pressuring it,” says J. Peter Pham, director of the Michael S. Ansari Africa Center at the Atlantic Council. There is no substance to the conditions and the sole consequence will be denying young Ethiopian military officers a chance to be educated at a US university, he says.
