Asmara simply means united/unity.
Asmara comes from the root word Semret, which means unity, too.
The original name of Asmara was Arbate-Asmera (the four are united); as in the original four clans who united to fight off the bandits that were preying on the area in the 12th century. Over the centuries, the 'Arbate' part of the name was dropped from its name and it's just became Asmara.
