Unlike Philippinos, majority of Ethiopians are illiterate and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Hence the gap between poor and rich will be much higher than the Philippines. Most Philippino women are migrating to the Middle East to work and Ethiopian women are doing the same. Philippinos borrowed so much money from IMF, and as per the structural adjustment programme they were forced to rent millions of heactares of farm lands to agro-corporations, which Philippine rescinded all those laws, immediately after they overthrew their dictatorial regime (Ferdinand Marcos), whose wife had thousands of pairs of shoes. Africa's impressive growth

..Africa is now one of the world’s fastest-growing regions

MUCH has been written about the rise of the BRICs and Asia’s impressive economic performance. But an analysis by The Economist finds that over the ten years to 2010, six of the world’s ten fastest-growing economies were in sub-Saharan Africa. On IMF forecasts Africa will grab seven of the top ten places over the next five years (our ranking excludes countries with a population of less than 10m as well as Iraq and Afghanistan, which could both rebound strongly in the years ahead). Over the past decade the simple unweighted average of countries’ growth rates was virtually identical in Africa and Asia. Over the next five years Africa is likely to take the lead. In other words, the average African economy will outpace its Asian counterpart.

City lays foundation for 42,000 condo houses


Addis Ababa- January 12 (WIC) - City Mayor, Kuma Demeksa, on Wednesday visited and laid foundation stones for the construction of 42,000 new condominium housing units in Addis Ababa.

The administration plans to construct the condominium houses at 16 sites located in the six sub cities of the capital. The condominium units are expected to make an estimated 300,000 city residents beneficiaries.

“This project is our priority. We will do everything in our power to make sure its successful completion,” Kuma said while visiting the sites.

With a view to curbing increasing housing problems, the city administration has launched the construction of over 17,000 housing units since last budget year and the new project will take the number of houses under construction to 60,000.

“Addressing housing problems, creating jobs and rehabilitating villages are among major contributions of the projects,” said the Mayor adding that housing transfers are enabling fair distribution of wealth among the society.

At the end of the current budget year, the city administration expects to complete 80 per cent of the project which is projected to consume 6.7 billion birr and create jobs for over 80,000 people.
A total of 856 local contractors, who have received a special training, will take part in the project.
