Islamist militant group al-Shabab has ambushed an Ethiopian base in Somalia, with dozens of casualties, reports say.

They attacked the base, near Yurkut village in the central region of Geddo, from two directions at dawn.

Al-Shabab claimed to have killed 73 Ethiopians, while the Somali government said it in turn killed 48 members of the militant group.

BBC correspondents say it is the most intense fighting since Ethiopian troops entered Somalia last November.

The fighting lasted for more than three hours, but correspondents say it will be difficult to verify the exact number of dead.

The attack took place between the border with Ethiopia and Baidoa, a town Ethiopian forces took last month from al-Shabab rebels.

It came hours after the African Union announced the troops would be withdrawn from Baidoa and Beledweyne, another town the Ethiopians took, by the end of April.

They will be replaced by forces from Djibouti, Uganda and Burundi, AU Commissioner for Peace and Security Ramtane Lamamra said.

The militants may have been militarily weakened but with several recent attacks they are showing that they are not a spent force, says the BBC East Africa Correspondent Will Ross in Nairobi.

The UN Security Council recently voted to increase the AU peacekeeping force (Amisom) to 17,000 troops.

Kenyan soldiers also fighting al-Shabab in Somalia are due to be integrated into the Amisom force next week.

That is why i say weyane is not yet tested in battle field. their bogus claim of engaging the Derg army and win over it is just a hearsey. we all know that Derg's experienced and battle hardned troops were stationed in Ertrea. what weyanne faced was derg peasant militia who had 2-3 month training. otherwise, there is no reason for weyanne to spend 100k soldiers in Badme, 20k soldiers in Somalia in 2007, 70 soldiers agains ONLF in 2008 and now 73 soldiers in baidoa in just a matter of 4 hours. mind you, the african troops (AMISOM) and Kenyan troops havent yet faced any catestroph like this.

The governor of Bay told Reuters from Baidoa that they had launched attacks on two al Shabaab bases about 7 km and 11 km away from the town to pre-empt an offensive.

"We are waiting for details of casualties from our men on the ground but we have seized weapons and ammunitions, fighting has now died down," he said.

What you have said is correct; weayne is a group of Tigrian bandits join the struggle to escape poverty, but not based on principle or ideological belief, as some lunatic Tigrians trying to portray it.
Truly, Shabia was the only one who confronted Derg with equal and balanced force, otherwise, the weayne’s rug thug bandits, if it was not Dergs its own failure its place would have been in Dedebit.
Without doubt, if we have courageous leaders the Gondar peasant would be enough to the Tigrain rug thug militias. We do not need mechanized or well trained army, but simple peasant would take care of those thieves and put them in their cave, Dedebit.
The only thing what we need is committed and selfless leaders who can mobilize the people and make them to understand the nature of the Tigrian gangs and their ultimate goal.
After that the people would do the rest.
The most important is to convince the people that weayne is the archenemy, which is threatening their survival; especially Amharas

This fact is absolutely correct. The dergue never had any battle in tigray territory and the TPLF fighters were all inside Eritrea. They were helping EPLF in their little way (water boys, guns cleaners, picking up dead dergues corpses and now and then they were carrying stuff in their backs when camels were not readily available),........... because they knew they will benefit out of EPLF"s victory.
Had they opted to stay inside tigray, the dergue would not have any problem destroying every single one of them.
And they have nerves to say that, they were fighting to free ethiopia being inside Eritrea.
