Ethiopian Muslims quest for justice continues
Ethiomedia | March 16, 2012
ADDIS ABABA - Ethiopian Muslims are up with serious demands, like replacing the Majlis by a genuine, popularly-elected one. So far, their demands have fallen on deaf ears. But the government wouldn't fail to recognize the Muslim resolve either! (Video source: Bilal)

The Dam and the Damned: Gibe III Ethiopia – Alemayehu G. Mariam
Sunday, March 18th, 2012
Alemayehu G. Mariam
Three years ago to the week, I wrote a weekly commentary entitled, “Cry Me a Lake: Crime Against Nature”. That commentary focused on the plight of tens of thousands of Ethiopians who are sick and dying from drinking the polluted waters of Lake Koka, once a pristine lake, located some 50km south of Addis Ababa. A world renowned scientist from the University of Durham, U.K., analyzed water samples from Lake Koka and found “high concentrations of the microcystis bacteria”, which he said are among “some of the most toxic molecules known to man.” I argued:

The Lake Koka environmental disaster is only the tip of the iceberg. Ethiopia is facing an ecological catastrophe: deforestation, desertification, soil erosion, overgrazing and population explosion. The Ethiopian Agricultural Research Institute says Ethiopia loses up to 200,000 hectares of forest every year. Between 1990 and 2005, Ethiopia lost 14.0% of its forest cover (2,114,000 hectares) and 3.6% of its forest and woodland habitat. If the trend continues, it is expected that Ethiopia could lose all of its forest resources in 11 years, by the year 2020.

by ARGAW ASHINE, Africa Review

Ethiopian dissidents have moved to form a Libya-style National Transitional Council in an attempt to unseat long-time Ethiopian dissidents have moved to form a Libya-style National Transitional Council in an attempt to unseat long-time premier Meles Zenawi's government.premier Meles Zenawi’s government.

The pro-revolution council, which counts exiled opposition politicians, scholars, activists and traders among its ranks, says it hopes to fill the “leadership vacuum” until a “democratically-elected” administration is installed.

The council’s presumed leader, Dr Fisseha Eshetu, said the group would look to form a caretaker government after removing the current administration.

Dr Fisseha is a well-known businessman who recently fled Ethiopia and was the founder and former owner of the country’s first private university.

He said the council would consist of representatives of politicians and “like-minded” citizens willing to work towards “democracy and justice” in Ethiopia.

“This is not a political party, this is a forum to coordinate and support the struggle carried out by all stakeholders for regime change,” he told this reporter.

Dr Fisseha at one time run a short-lived private media outlet. He sold his Unity University in 2008 over what was reported as financial challenges.

According to the businessman, who says that “change is imminent in Ethiopia, the council is set for its official launch at the end of this month in the United States.
