The ELF was a feudal 'organization' with several power centers commanded by power crazed war lords. Sabe was a mercurial politician respected throughout the arab world and in the process made himself a multi-millionaire.
His contribution to the Eritrean armed struggle is undeniable, but his greed and desire to be the only power broker in the Eritrean armed struggle - was its Achilles Heel and led to his own downfall and demise.
Melake was a warrior and military strategist but not an astute politician. Everybody begged him no to go the conference after the Abdella Idris concocted coup de tat, but he ignored the advice given to him and was killed by the Abdella's henchmen.
Melake was not the one who carried a gun under his socks in one of the central committee meetings. It was the Asmarino, Abraham Tecle, the hero of the armed struggle and, the Fedayan No.1, who used to enter Asmara and Addis at ease for clandestine operations.
Finally, Abdella and his elks were Sudanese soldiers before they joined the struggle. Their peasant background and their lack of political awareness were a hindrance to the armed struggle. The crimes committed by these war lords in the darkest days of our armed struggle pale by comparison to the Rwanda genocide. THIS IS NOT THE PROPER MEDIUM TO DISCUSS THIS PAINFUL ISSUES.
