Syrian National Council gains international support, vows to pay rebel fighters
By the CNN Wire Staff
Mon April 2, 2012

(CNN) -- Dozens of international leaders have bolstered support for a Syrian opposition group that is vowing to pay rebel fighters.

The international Friends of the Syrian People group formally recognized the Syrian National Council as a legitimate representative of the Syrian people at a conference in Istanbul on Sunday.

That effectively makes the SNC, which includes many Syrian exiles, the main opposition group with which other nations plan to work.

The 83-member Friends group -- which includes representatives from Turkey, the Arab League, United States, France and the United Kingdom -- declared its "support for legitimate measures taken by the Syrian population to protect themselves" -- but stopped short of agreeing to send weapons to the poorly armed rebels.

The National League for Democracy won 40 of the 44 seats that it contested, according to partial results announced by the National Electoral Commission on state television.
The party had claimed earlier Monday it won at least 43 seats -- including Suu Kyi's.

U.N. team heads to Syria to talk about monitoring cease-fire
By the CNN Wire Staff
updated 7:21 AM EDT, Wed April 4, 2012

(CNN) -- A U.N. advance peacekeeping team is headed to Damascus for talks on deploying observers to monitor a cease-fire, a spokesman for special envoy Kofi Annan said.

The team should arrive by Thursday, Ahmad Fawzi said.

But growing reports of violence this week suggest high-level diplomatic efforts and promises by the Syrian government have yet to produce any semblance of a cease-fire.

On Monday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime promised to withdraw its forces from population centers by April 10.
