Eritrea leader Isaias Afewerki in 'robust health'

The Eritrean government has dismissed persistent rumours that President Isaias Afewerki is dead.

"Isaias Afewerki is in robust health," Information Minister Ali Abdu told the BBC.

He blamed the rumours, which began about a week ago, on groups wishing to destabilise the country.

Mr Isaias has led Eritrea since it gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 - facing criticism for failing to implement democratic reforms.

Rumours on various opposition websites and on social media note that the president has not appeared on television for nearly a month, which they believe is unusual.

But Mr Ali said such concerns were "nonsense".

"I always see him every day - I saw him today at 9 o'clock," he told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme.

"Isaias Afewerki is in robust health - you can put this in capital letters."

He added that Mr Isaias was not going to go television just to "respond to this cheap propaganda".

Isaias is definitely preparing for a major military operation, that's why last Sunday he was inspecting his troops at 3 A.M. in the morning, who would inspect a farm at that hour, he was verifying the military preparation under the cover of darkness. He is now refusing to come out in public, because the success of this operation depends on the ruse that he is dead. I don't think Isaias is dead, he has never been more alive.

Ali Abdu was emphatic, Isaias is still alive. I don't think he would bother to speak like that if he were dead.

My honest advice is do not be fooled by Ali Abdu the equivalent of revolution on this website born to lie and all the Eritreans are lying including the oppositions telling the death and other things. The Tigrigna speaking people can detect from the ministry of information what he said shows us Issayas is most likely very sick and going under treatment up to life threatening illness.

Eritrea does not have any kind of plan to attack Ethiopia at this point, they are extremely weak and they do not have manpower or the economy to sustain them regardless the health of Issayas. The only hope they have is TPDM to grow rapidly and weakened Woyane or topple Meles regime by his armies as TPDM challenge them in Tigray soil. Eritrea is investing huge amount of Eritrean wealth to feed and arm large armies of Tigrayans in her soil. We do not know whether the investment will pay off or not at this point. TPDM can be wiped out once they are exposed in to Tigray or they may topple Meles regime, depend upon the growth of TPDM in numbers and the people of Tigray acceptance at the Woreda levels. Again if Issayas die the new regime may not go the road Issayas wanted to go and hand them to Meles and make peace with him. That is the most likely will happen after Issayas if a new regime comes to power in order to maintain peace among the different ethnic Eritreans. If the new regime of Eritrea travels the same road Issayas walked for the last 12 years, then there is very strong possibility the other Eritrean ethnic will walk out or demand their own ethnic Killil like Ethiopia ethnics and control their future fate like Kunama, Afar Irob supported by Ethiopia and Tigre could get support from the Muslim world.

I know the Afar are Muslims, but I thought the Irob were Christians, how can the Muslim world help Christian Irob?

Comformist,

More than anything religion is not the main factor who they should help but which side has the better chance to live in peace and feed families. Three of the ethnics are divided in to two right now and they wanted to unite and have their own Killil like Ethiopia ethnics, so far three ethnics who live with Ethiopia showed huge progress for the last 20 years than those who live on the Eritrean side. The Kunama Eritreans land is being occupied by the highlander Tigrigna speakers right now and they are fighting to evict them. The Afars 80% of the populations live on the Ethiopian side but Eritrea has the 80% of their lands and access to the sea. Irob Ethoopian has better life than any Ethiopian ethnics including Tigrayans. The Tigray authorities did very good job in Irob more than naywhere in Tigdray state.

I wish this man lives and writes his thinking processes for history's sake. From hearing his public comments a few times, he didn't sound to have ill-intent. In fact, he may be a goodhearted man who went off course because of some thing that changed his thinking processes and was unfortunate not to have around courageous and wise friends that could bring him back on course.
