I Hate Eritrean Guys!

written by Wintana Habte

I read Martha’s interesting perspective yesterday and thought I’d share my experience too. First is first, I’ve always been a very feisty girl and one who isn’t shy to say what’s on my mind. Even though I can be difficult, I never really put much preference in guys. The few times I attended Eritrean festivals and parties, I would either get the ‘yo shawty’ losers or the I’m feeling you but am too scared to say hi looks — which probably saved me time, since if you’re not man enough to approach me with respect, then you sure are not man enough to keep me around. Don’t get me wrong, I seen plenty of potential prospects but they were just not heading my way to be examined, which was a bit upsetting. Long story longer, I gave up on Eritrean guys and said the hell with it. I’m not an ugly girl, why should I limit my options is what I told myself. It was about this time when I went through a vixen phase where I bashed Eritrean guys, rejected them hard (like tell them I don’t date Eritrean guys to their face) and other things I rather not say.

So a little over a year and half ago, I was siting on a plane seat, waiting for it to take off when this cute Eritrean guy comes on late and sits next to me. Mind you, this was a five hour plane ride we were going on, so I’m not going to start a conversation and have that awkward silence for the rest of the flight. As he approached our seat, he looked me in the eyes, smiled and didn’t say anything. The first thing I noticed when he sat next to me was he smelled really good. The next thing I noticed was he wasn’t interested in me which I have to admit, peaked my curiosity a bit. The sun was hitting our window hard, so I did the polite thing and said, “do you want me to put the window shades down” and as he’s reading his magazine, he nonchalantly replied with, “no, I’m afraid of the dark”. —-So yea, I put it down, which created tension and started a conversation. Oaky okay long story short, we talked for most of the 5 hour flight and I couldn’t help but fall for him. He is amazing, charming, whatever you want to call it, he has it! As we’re leaving our flight, he helps me get my luggage down from the top compartment and simply turns his back on me and walks away. I was PISSED!!! I quickly caught up with him inside the airport and asked if he was scared to ask for my number? He took off his earphones and said, “I don’t give my number out to Eritrean girls.” —-I said fine, take mines! And stormed off confused. He finally calls me two weeks later and we really hit it off. Three months later, I brought it up again on what he meant when he said about not giving Eritrean girls his number and he finally told me it was because I told him that exact same line at a Halloween custom party (he was wearing a mask at the time) that both of us attended. KARMA!

We’re getting married this August and I really feel a connection with him that I’ve never felt before in my life. Like I know this is going to make me sound like a little girl but he really makes me happy to be around him. I think some of that has to do with the point Martha brought up about a culture connection we share.
