A video which shows Ethiopian Prime Minster Meles Zenawi being heckled at the latest 2012 G8 Food Security Symposium in Washington, D.C. has ignited a debate about the role of journalists in authoritarian regimes.

Ethiopian activist and journalist Abebe Gellaw is seen in the video shouting “Freedom, Freedom, Meles Zenawi is a dictator, you are committing crime against humanity.” Prime Minster Meles Zenawi who usually enjoys flattering pro-government press coverage at home looks shocked and irritated.

Discussing the video on Facebook, Abiye Teklemariam draws a comparison between the late Romanian dictator Ceausescu and Meles Zenawi:

I have seen a lot of leaders being heckled by protestors. They usually hide their shock and anger so effortlessly. Some of them actually get our sympathies with self-deprecating humor and fake concern for freedom of speech of the heckler. Meles Zenawi though looked utterly baffled and angry. His reaction had an uncanny resemblance with that famous Ceausescu moment, the way the Romanian dictator reacted when he, for the first time since his ascendancy to power, was booed by the normally impeccably obedient people during his speech. This video tells a lot!

Mesfin Negash says:

What an experience to MZ! You never saw MZ so shocked, embarrassed and angry in front of an audience. Journalist Abebe Gelaw made his point beyond proportion and IN PERSON. Must watch moment of MZ! PUBLIC WARNING:- you are strongly advised not to try or improvise this at home unless…! [lol]

Al Mariam, an academic and blogger based in USA, argues that Zenawi got a taste of his own medicine:

Zenawi was shocked, bewildered, flabbergasted and completely disoriented. It was as though 90 million Ethiopians had lined up pointing an accusatory finger at him and shouting in unison, “Meles Zenawi! You are a dictator!…” In that moment Abebe gloriously realized the true meaning of the tagline of his website addisvoice.com – “A Voice of the Voiceless”. Ironically, the voice of the voiceless rendered speechless the man who had rendered millions voiceless!

The expression on his face [Zenawi's] was total disbelief. “Is that Abebe Gellaw? It can’t be! I thought I had him canned in Kality Prison with Eskinder Nega, Reeyot Alemu and Woubshet Taye. What the hell is he doing here?!?”

TigraiOnline.com, a woyane website has accused Journalist Abebe Gellow of being anti Food-Aid, for he has interrupted their "visionary" dictator Meles Zenawi during the middle of his speech begging for more AID.

Little did the beggars at TigraiOnline know that Hero Abebe Gellaw's call for FREEDOM encompasses the FREEDOM to grow your own food and feed your family, which is a God given right that's being taken away from millions of Ethiopians forced off their ancestral land and surviving on food handouts. WE NEED FREEDOM TO FEED OURSELVES !

Overheard at the Geza Tegaru Paltalk room on Saturday:

"...Who cares if Abebe Gellaw insulted Ayte Meles Zenawi at the G8 summit, so long as the Prime Minister returned home carrying large amount of Santim (AID money)...."

It's these kind of beggars that are running Ethiopia into the ground

If you think about it, that statement clearly and accurately describes the reality after that day. Meles Zenawi is alive and looting, he has not lost anything, respect? he does not know it. Sure Abebe Gellaw excited many Ethiopians with words that are true. You heard that old adage, sticks and rocks may break my bones, but insults don't mean anything. Look, Meles Zenawi does not possess conscienceness, thus the insults have passed. If any of the leaders that were sitting with him (the good humans with conscience) need to say something about it, tell the guy to step aside or change his ways, but he is created for the exact purpose that he does conscienceless things for them, hence they would comfort him instead of telling him to reduce it down.

Meles Zenawi is less than a normal human, he is a coward as a warrior, which was established by his own peers from the days of struggle, and as a beggar he is shameless, which is established by many journalists, he continue to build his Empire at the expense of Ethiopians, he hired his wife to be the CEO of the biggest conglomerate in AFRICA what happened? Nothing! When he took the steering wheel of the country's economy, no one said anything, do you know what that means, he owns Ethiopia and all Ethiopians, recently he purchased Solomon Tekalign, because he has money, do you think Solomon would have gone to Meles had he not seen the power of EFFORT compared to the fighters having nothing but a rifle and the desire to fight TPLF?

Let's be honest withourselves, you sound like you are here to make us toothless dogs, you want us to bark and make all the noises, but have nothing at the end of the day, ecept you want us to celebrate on little things like calling out leaders, which they do in democracies with words much more strong than this. Saying something like what Abebe Gellaw said is nothing to Meles or Azeb, for neither of them have conscience. These are humans from outside but completely detached from human feeling, their business is just collect more money and intimidate others with the money they have and create problems in the region. Having said that, let me tell you what would be wise, having to throw TPLF out of Ethiopia, that would be a NUANCE.
