Regional Trade Ties
According to figures provided by the International Monetary Fund, trade plays a minimal role in Eritrea’s relations with all countries in the region. Eritrea is a small import market and it produces very little that is sought by countries in the region.

Eritrea’s geographical location, in spite of the fact that it has two major ports, also works against trade with some regional countries. Its most obvious trade partner is Ethiopia, but the break in diplomatic relations ensures that trade is nonexistent except for small amounts of local border transactions. Ethiopia,Uganda, Djibouti and South Sudan have almost no trade with Eritrea. Eritrea has no exports to Kenya but imports between $4 and $5 million annually from Kenya. Between 2007 and 2010, Eritrea exported $3 million in value annually to Sudan and imported about $1 million dollars in products from Sudan.

The IMF figures may not have captured all of Eritrea’s imports from Sudan, especially oil during the 2007-2010 timeframe. Even in the context of African trade relations, however, these figures are surprisingly small.

Had the IMF made the comparisons between Tigray and Eritrea, the GDP figures would have been different -- with Tigray surpassing Eritrea by a great margin. I know that for fact because I am from Adwa, Tigray!

At one time, he "advises" Eritreans not to invest "on shaebia" because it´s throwing money in a "black hole" and a few statements later he threatens them that if they do it is "...inadvertently cooperating with the persecution of the Eritrean people." Is he concerned for them losing money or giving money to a govt., he perfectly knows, will put it into good use? Funny guy, ain´t he?

Kehbt, there nothing funny about totalitarian/slave-labor economy. People are in bondage while you're enjoying freedom/free market economics in America. Selfish moron.

An economic output of a nation does not represent the well-being of the individual citizen on the street. A well distributed economy with less output is much better than an economy with high output with a huge income gap between the average citizen on the street and the well to do citizens on top of the income bracket. Economies with a large gap between the average citizen on the street and a well to do on top usually end up in disturbance.

One can only keep on growing for an extended time, but when the gap continue to grow, the economic gains for the well to do goes down. So, maintaining a loose opportunity path is not only good for the middle class, but also for the well to do. Make economic mobility upward available for all, which means the well to do will have to take home a little bit less so the citizen on the street can find a way to increase the size of his pocket for the well to do to pry into it without shame.
