Re: Gud Naw!!!

First of all , attributing all the schism and distinction which exist and which existed between Eritreans and Tigrians to the Italians rule is totally wrong and misleading. Because the The distinction has always been there even before the arrival of Italians to the Area. and here i want to emphasize that, The question here is not about eating Barilla Pasta or Injera] it is more complex than that.

Pre Italian Rule and Code, Deqi-40

Deqi40 [The sons of 40] Those are Tigrian civilians who accompanied Ras Allula to come to the Eritrean highland and settle there. The fact that Eritrean highlanders demanded that offpsring of those people to stay 40 years before they are seeing as equals and share the joy and the sadness of their neighborhood tells a great del how Eritreans felt about Tigrians. Even after their stay in the area for 40 years blessing your daughter or son in a marraige to the offspring of those people were No no. Not to mention to refuse those people to be granted a piece of land.

What does your "not necessarily" mean in the context of two countries in conflict mainly based on the issue of language preservation, hence ethnicity preservation? So, you have been taken to your own term of taking this further.

Eden wrote:Also my argument here has nothing to do with where my mom or my dad come from so don't try to make sense of what I say by trying to approch it from where I might come from. To make this easier, think of me as I'm from Brazil.

Are you taking yourself outside the box of our society's consciousness? Is this your revolutionary idea?

Eden wrote:Just because you are the same ethnicity as your parents doesn't mean all people are the same ethnicity as their parents. By the way, this may not be easy to understand for some but I can point to you a lot of research done on this issue.

Please point me to those research. May be I misunderstood you, or you misunderstood the research you profess to know about.

Eden wrote:Don't be surprised a tigrian such as isayas separated and led Eritrea because it happens all the time in the world. weird but it does happen. don't forget the afar also got divided, not just the tigre/ tigray.

Did the research works you refer to also conclude that such things are weird?

Semira wrote:I have met Gonderes who went to school with bereket in Gonder. Edens explanation makes sense. Hitler is known as German. But his true origin is in Austria which isn't seen by the German as pure German. what matters most is the persons choice. not his parents or not what others want to classify him.

Why are you trying to justify Hitler's actions?

The moral of the story is that you have equal proportion of Agew gene as the Abyssinians do. But you didn't knew it.  what more evidence can i bring you than your governments website ?

You didn't prove anything at all. Fact of the matter is Tigray and Amhara lands were traditionally Agew lands and you can see that by the historical evidence of what the Agews left behind. Abyssinians are Agews, as well as part Oromo (depending on the region) that inherited the cultures of Axum. This is different from the original Ge'ez speakers who may have absorbed Agew influence when they migrated north. For the most part Biher Tigrinya are Semitic, with Beja and minor Agew influences. There's nothing wrong with being Agew, they're beautiful people with a rich culture. But for some reason if you tell an Abyssinian they are Agew or Oromo they get offended. And that's the picture I was trying to project. The multi ethnic Abyssinians are using their own true identity to oppress people like the Oromos, and other minorities. Haile Selassie himself belong to three ethnic group. So it is a big illogical and laughable when I hear Amharas and Tigrayans trying to separate themselves from their own Ethiopian brothers while trying to attach themselves to Eritreans (the holders of Axumite culture as well as many other cultures, Beja and so on). There's no real reason or evidence for "Ethiopians" to attach themselves to Eritreans, if anything Abyssinians have more in common and have been more influenced by the people who share the same country as they do, yet they shun them? If anything Eritrea has more of a closer relationship with Sudan, but we don't use that as a justification for invasion and annexation.

So lets stop with the "we are the same" filth. Ethiopia is a multi ethnic country, no one can claim one ethnicity. And the same goes for Eritrea and the majority of Africa. "Habesha" culture is not Ethiopian culture, it is the mere cultural pot that every group in Ethiopia typically melts into to acquire social mobility. So lets stop the nonsense....

This discussion has shown what researchers in the field have long documented.

It may be postulated that a protracted identity struggle must have been set in motion by the sustained confrontation between the Northern Ethiopians and the intruding Oriental Semites. This would not have been so had the Ethiopians defined either themselves or the Semites as inferior people. Instead the ancient Tigreans conceived of themselves as superior people and at the same time perceived the Jews, Arabs and Syrians as superior in certain respects. Impressed by aspects of Oriental Semitic culture, they may have associated the lighter skin color of its bearers with their achievements. Such a conflict demanded a resolution.
.
.
.
The Tigreans had to deny that they were the Hamites of the Old Testament. They did this by portraying their elite as having been descended from Solomon and David. They used this genealogy to replace an older Ethiopian tradition which held that the kings of Aksum were in fact descended from Ham--through Aethiopia, his son and grandson!
"Having defined their rulers as Semites, the Tigrean scribes could now appropriate the divine covenant with the sons of Shem."

From Professor Donald Levine's Greater Ethiopia book.

Isn't the discussion here at least partly reflective of the assertion in the book?

Isn't Eritrea's claim over Aksum now, instead of when they planned or executed their independence, at least partly reflective of the assertion in the book?

Isn't carrying the names Shaebia (Saba) and Jebha (Jaba) and saying we are not the children of Ham reflective of the assertion in the book?

I want to read hmantes take on this if he is still around and not afraid to talk.

He is referring to the tribalism in Ethiopia. There's never been a such thing in Eritrea, other than ethnic harmony and peaceful coexistence. Eritreans being proud of Axum is just stating the obvious and just one part of our history, since we are home to other kingdoms. But we don't let the past define us nor limit us.

lol @ you not knowing what Shaebia and Jebha means....very sad at this stage
