Ethiopian FM Tedros Adhanom gave his first comment on the January 21st event at ministry of information in Asmara, Eritrea.
Tedros, in his address to the Ethiopian parliament, he elevated the incident at the MOI in Eritrea to a “failed coup” while many dismissed it as just an action of renegade soldiers.
Tedros entertained two possible scenarios that will follow the incident:
-the regime will continue by making minor “structural adjustment”
-And, the other possible scenarios which he categorized it as dangerous one is a wholesale change in leadership. He added that such whole sale leadership change could have dangerous impact in the region. At any rate, he said he is following the events closely and adjusting the country reaction to the demands that the situation brings. He assured his audience that his assessments are not based on hearsay but concrete facts from the sources.
According to my diplomatic sources in Asmara, in agreement with Tedros Adahnom’s first entertained scenario, there are whispers that PIA regime will more likely follow the Chinese communist party style tailored to Eritrea’s “objective situations”. The changes that will be implemented are:
• EPLF will host its long awaited third congress within six months period of time
• The Eritrean constitution will be implemented with minor revisions recommended by EPLF’s third congress: the contentious issues for the congress to settle will be:
- whether Eritrea will pursue a multi-party system as it is stipulated in the ratified constitution or opt for a “broad based” front.
-Eritrea’s strategy in finding a lasting solution to the border problem with Ethiopia and
-Eritrea’s relations with various Ethiopian armed and non-armed opposition groups.
• In a secret ballot, the congress will elect its central committee (CC) and the CC in return will elect its politburo and secretary general of the party.
• There is slight chance that PIA might opt to resign after overseeing the proposed changes.
The same diplomats hinted that he might resign by 2015.
