An Environmental Pioneer dead at 90

Stewart Udall – Passed earlier today.
Former JFK/LBJ Secretary of Interior Stewart Udall – brother of the late Congressman "Mo" Udall, father of current Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico, uncle of Senator Mark Udall of Colorado, died this morning of natural causes aged 90 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The relevance is as an environmental pioneer that fought for the Clean Air Act of 1970, the Wilderness Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.
As Interior Secretary form 1961-1969, Udall added four new national parks, six new national monuments, eight seashores and lakeshores, nine recreation areas, 20 historic sites and 56 wildlife refuges…added 2.4 million acres to the National Park Service. These accomplishments were noted by President Obama and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson today. He was also an advocate of the native Americans, Inuits, radiation victims of nuclear testing/uranium mines, Western water resources.
Udall was the son of an Arizona Supreme Court Justice and served as a gunner during WWII on B-24 missions…
He was also an active environmentally in public life and in retirement – Had a part in Earth Days
