German conglomerate Siemens Energy said it secured an order for a 149-turbine wind farm in the state of Washington, its largest U.S. wind turbine project.

Siemens said it secured an order to provide 2.3-megawatt wind turbines to Washington state utility Puget Sound Energy. The 149 wind turbines are for Phase 1 of the Lower Snake River Wind Project in southeast Washington.

The Snake River project is expected to meet the energy needs of more than 100,000 PSE consumers through an installed capacity of 343 MW. Later phases include the option to purchase 110 more turbines in 2012.

Siemens supplies, installs and commissions the wind turbines under the agreement. PSE can expect shipment of the 2.3 MW turbines by March 2011, the company said.

“This order is an important stepping stone towards becoming one of the top two wind turbine supplier in the U.S.,” said Rene Umlauft, chief executive officer of the Siemens Renewable Energy Division.
