University Park, Pa. — Twelve college students from across the country who were selected for highly competitive paid summer internships at news organizations through a program coordinated by the Dow Jones News Fund will spend nine days at Penn State for a copy editing “boot camp” before they begin their assignments later this month.

The boot camp, co-directed by Marie Hardin, an associate professor in the Department of Journalism, and John Dillon, a senior lecturer in the Department of Journalism, begins June 2 on the University Park campus.

During their time on campus, the students will complete a variety of assignments and work with College of Communications faculty members and professional visitors in sessions designed to hone their copy-editing skills and further prepare them for their summer assignments.

Eighty-four students were selected from more than 600 applicants to work as news and sports copy editors, multimedia editors and business reporters nationwide this summer. Those selected will work a minimum of 10 weeks, with those returning to school in the fall also earning $1,000 scholarships.

Penn State had 10 students selected for the summer internships — the most of any school in the nation.

“Our program emphasizes developing strong editing skills by requiring all of our print journalism majors to complete an editing course,” Hardin said. “It is gratifying to see some of our top students pursue editing careers, and many get a good start through the News Fund.”

Students participating in the training session at Penn State, listed with their colleges and summer assignments, are:

* Georgia Adams, University of West Florida, Roanoke (Va.) Times;
* Shannon Anderson, Marshall University, Naples (Fla.) Daily News;
* Michael Balducci, University of Central Florida, Charleston (W.Va.) Gazette;
* Ashley Carnifax, University of Central Florida, Palm Beach Post;
* Allison Chopin, Washington and Lee University, Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch;
* Tamara Conrad, Penn State, The Journal News, White Plains, N.Y.;

* Sarah Gast, Vanderbilt University, Cape Cod Times, Hyannis, Mass.;
* Kirstie Hettinga, Penn State, AccuWeather;
* Robert Ryan, University of Colorado, St. Petersburg Times; and
* Erin Shields, Penn State, The Washington Times.

Professional visitors assisting with the training session include: Bill Connolly, retired senior editor at The New York Times and co-author of the paper’s stylebook; Gene Foreman, the retired Larry and Ellen Foster Professor at Penn State who still serves as a visiting professor after 41 years in journalism, including a quarter century as an editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer; Rich Holden, executive director of the Dow Jones News Fund; and Bill Marsh, Week in Review editor at The New York Times.

The Dow Jones News Fund summer internship program begin in 1962.
