Oestrogen levels a factor in older women
There are a number of contraception courses and specific certification is available for GPs. Nurses can obtain a special family planning certificate and other health professionals are also involved in educating the public.
There are side effects and complications with each long-term method. Use of the Depo Provera injection – which is given every three months – is not as common here as other methods. It is not usually given in women over 40. It is suitable for people who have difficulty remembering to take daily pills and people who experience side-effects on regular pills.
The advantage of the Evra patch, which is changed once per week, is convenience of use. If a person is sick, the contraceptive agent is still absorbed.
There are many myths about age. Oestrogen is normally available to a woman up to the age of 50 who is fit and healthy, said Dr Galimberti.
Age alone is not a contraindication for using the hormone. Thrombosis might only become a concern if the woman is obese, has high blood pressure and/or smokes. According to the WHO guidelines, oestrogen is a worry only if there is another risk factor.
