NEWARK, N.J.  – The retirement question on most Americans’ minds is whether to retire now or to work a little longer to bolster their financial security – a question that is even more pressing for individuals who lack access to financial tools and resources.

The Prudential Foundation is helping Americans answer this perplexing question through a financial literacy initiative focused on sharing retirement planning information and encouraging Americans at every economic level to begin thinking seriously about how they want to live after their working years. As part of this initiative, The Prudential Foundation funded a 60-minute television program produced by NJN Public Television entitled Ready to Retire? The program premiered on NJN on Tuesday, June 22, and will be rebroadcast on Sunday, June 27 at 4:00 PM. The full program can also be viewed on-demand at www.njn.net/television/specials/readytoretire.

The Prudential Foundation has also developed www.prudentialfoundation.org/readytoretire, an online tool to provide additional resources.

“Retirement planning is one of the most important issues facing Americans today,” said Gabriella Morris, president of The Prudential Foundation. “The Ready to Retire? program provides insight into some of the common questions people have about achieving and maintaining financial security so they can lead independent and self-sufficient lives during their retirement years.”

Ready to Retire?” focuses on the challenges that pre-retirees face, as told through the stories of individuals at the crossroads of their retirement years.

The Prudential Foundation’s new site features video vignettes of personal stories, retirement calculators and useful links to resources on various topics, including basic retirement preparation, addressing shortfalls in retirement and generating income in retirement.

“We hope that Ready to Retire? will help people who may not have given much thought to retirement understand the importance of planning and the nuances of retirement preparedness,” said Morris. “There are some signs now of economic recovery, but as we work to rebuild communities hardest hit by the economic crisis, we can see that people in these neighborhoods are still reeling from its effects. Ready to Retire? helps people consider all the facets of retirement.”
