Montreal open season with dramatic win over Leafs

Dan Brook | October 2nd, 2009 at 12:23 am

TORONTO (Reuters) – Josh Gorges scored with 13 seconds left in overtime as the Montreal Canadiens opened the new NHL season with a dramatic 4-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday.

Gorges, who had scored just five goals in four NHL seasons, spoiled the opening night party at the sold-out Air Canada Center when he slammed a loose puck in front of the Toronto net past goaltender Vesa Toskala to give Montreal the victory in the 697th meeting between the two sides.

Brian Gionta, Travis Moen and Glen Metropolit all scored in regulation for the Canadiens, while goaltender Carey Price was outstanding in a busy net-minding effort, saving 43 of 46 shots.

Alexei Ponikarovsky opened the scoring for Toronto in the first period before Matt Stajan scored a power play goal in each of the second and third periods. - Reuters
