Tune in tonight to watch Nobel laureate Eric Kandel on episode three of the Charlie Rose Brain Series. Episode Three: The Acting Brain will be broadcast Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 11:00 p.m. EST on PBS. Other Columbia faculty featured in the program include John Krakauer, associate professor of neurology and neuroscience, and Thomas Jessell, Claire Tow Professor of Motor Neuron Disorders in Neuroscience and professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics.

The Charlie Rose Brain Series explores one of sciences final frontiers, the study of the human brain. Each monthly episode will examine different subjects of the brain, including perception, social interaction, aging and creativity. The series looks at scientific discovery and advances in technology, in the hope that someday terrible illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s will be history. Eric Kandel, University Professor and Kavili Professor of Brain Science in Neuroscience, provides his expertise and insights throughout the series.

As highlighted in The New York Times, Episode Three “examines the dynamics of the motor system, which plans, coordinates and executes every movement a human needs to survive—from involuntary functions like breathing and the heartbeat to walking and talking to sophisticated actions necessary in sports. The episode also looks at the impact of stroke and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.”
