World Cup: Spain’s Dream Team Chokes
The Spaniards have a history of choking in the World Cup, and South Africa has been no exception.
The Spanish national team won the last European Championship, and is still considered one of the favorites in the World Cup. Or it least it was a favorite, until losing its very first game Wednesday, 1-0 to tiny Switzerland.
Switzerland had never beaten Spain, and these are the kinds of upsets that make the World Cup interesting to watch. No one was expecting it.
Spain is a kind of Dream Team – at least on offense and in midfield — and there was a sense in the country that this was finally the year to bring home the World Cup.
But now the doubts are back. “Presumptuous Spain Punished By Switzerland,” was the headline in one of the Italian papers.
The Spaniards tried to put a positive spin on it – getting your one bad game out of your system, and that kind of talk – but the fact is that hey are not invincible.
And they’ll have to play better than they did in their opener if they expect to compete with other favorites, such as Brazil, Argentina and Germany.
But don’t count Spain out of the final just yet. “It wasn’t our day,” Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque. “The World Cup isn’t over yet.”
