Google enables push Gmail for iPhone and Windows Mobile then folds under traffic

8910After Google’ push Calendar and Contacts, push Gmail is here, allowing messages sent to your Gmail account to be instantly pushed to your iPhone or Windows Mobile device.

The Gmail push feature is part of the Google Sync service that can push Google’s calendar and contact items to your phone. Gmail push is currently available only on iPhone, the iPod Touch and Windows Mobile devices.

The search giant wrote in a blog post that

having an over-the-air, always-on connection means that your inbox is up to date, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. Sync works with your phone’s native email application so there’s no additional software needed.

You can choose to sync any combination of Google Contacts, Calendar, or Gmail items with your phone. The company noted that Google Sync might cause increased usage of your device’s battery, just like any other push technology that retains network connectivity. Visit m.google.com/sync for detailed instructions on how to set Google’s push and sync services on your mobile phone or check out our feature on syncing with the google cloud.

Although both the iPhone and Windows Mobile support Gmail accounts via IMAP in their respective email clients, push technology leaves IMAP in the dust when it comes to the immediate delivery. Rather than checking your Gmail account once in set intervals (15 minutes, 30 minutes, etc.), like IMAP does, Google Sync pushes Gmail items to your phone within seconds after changes occur on the server.

However, the current implementation has some limitations. For starters, Google Sync on both iPhone and Windows Mobile won’t let you use Gmail’s Drafts folder from your phone’s mail client, requiring you to store unsaved messages on the phone, not the cloud. And on iPhone, you can’t initiate a full search of your Gmail account yet. – Geek
