GM testing technology for small electric cars
General Motors will test technology for small electric vehicles in a project with an Indian company that has produced EVs since 2001.
Cars from the project will initially be used in India, but GM expects to learn things it will use in other EVs — particularly small, limited-range city cars — around the world.
GM and Reva Electric Car Co. of Bangalore have only just begun work, but there’s a good chance the next generation of the Chevrolet Spark city car will be the test bed for the technology. GM plans to sell conventionally powered versions of the new Spark in the United States in 2011 or 2012.
Reva has sold about 3,000 cars in India and Europe. The tiny hatchback has a range of about 50 miles and takes seven hours to recharge.
“Development of small electric vehicles is a growth area around the global automotive industry,” said Nick Reilly, president of GM International Operations. “We are excited that this cooperation with Reva in India will accelerate GM’s progress to meet the emerging needs in many parts of the world.” – Freep
