I understand the weak password for root, but what do you mean by "no password"? If the hashed password contains illegal characters (I don't know which are chose, but i THINK one of them is "x" or "*"), the account is completely locked (even if it doesn't have a password).

Good article save for one thing - you forgot to mention that *nix admins operate dual roles of admin and programmer. Windows admins are just admins; whenever a difficult problem arises: Microsoft call centre. *nix admins on the other hand, first try fixing the problem with their own hacks, and if that fails, seek help - and if that still fails, wait for the next release hoping the problems have been fixed. So for MS admins trying to become *nix admins, get a quick refresher course in C and learn shell scripting - it your best friend.

Here's another one. "Not using GNU/Linux as one of your desktop systems." That's really how I learned it. At work, you might have to use something else, e. g. Microsoft Windows, because the corporation demanded it or you have some niche app that is Win32-only. OK, that's understandable, though I do have two machines at work (one MS Windows XP, one Ubuntu Linux).

But at home, that's a different story. There is no "boss" telling you what to run on your own property. Familiarity breeds comfort, and as you use it at home, you will become (of course) more comfortable with it at work. It's the same as when you learned Microsoft Windows. You probably used it at home, so at work, you could get busy with it.

Remember, you're in the IT biz. Learning new stuff comes with the territory. You had to learn Microsoft administration somehow, didn't ya? It's called "practice". This is the same kind of thing.

"Below are fifteen mistakes..." That would be a good one if written as 15, not "fifteen"!
