UW attracts $32 million for new genomics center
The University of Washington will receive more than $32 million, including $25 million in federal stimulus fund from the National Institutes of Health, to launch a new genomics research center, reports Clay Holtzman of the Puget Sound Business Journal. The center will be one of two in the country supported by the NIH, joining the Broad Institute which is a joint project of Harvard and MIT.
In addition to the federal funds, the new Northwest Genomics Center also will receive $2 million from the Washington Life Sciences Discovery Fund. The UW also is getting $5.2 million to conduct lung research.
The center will be affiliated with the UW’s Department of Genome Science, which is located in the Foege building on the Seattle campus. The building was constructed through a $60 million gift from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, reports Holtzman. At the new center, researchers will study heart, lung and blood diseases. – TechFlash
