MIT investigator’s Discovery Lecture to focus on lung cancer
Tyler Jacks, Ph.D., whose work has generated mouse models that more accurately mimic human cancers, will deliver the next Discovery Lecture on Nov. 19.
The lecture, sponsored by the Department of Cancer Biology, is entitled “Lung Cancer Progression.” It will begin at 4 p.m. in 208 Light Hall.
Jacks is the David H. Koch Professor of Biology and a Daniel K. Ludwig Scholar at MIT, where he directs the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. He also is an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine.
Jacks and his colleagues are exploring the genetic events that contribute to cancer development. They have generated a series of mouse strains that carry mutations in genes known to be involved in human cancer. Using these mouse models, they study the effects of the gene mutations on normal embryonic development, and they evaluate tumor progression and response to various chemotherapeutic agents using genetics, genomics and imaging technologies.
