Samsung pairs 55-inch streaming HDTV with 7-inch tablet remote

Last week, Toshiba announced the JournE touch tablet, a bizarre little Windows CE 6.0 (lolwut) device that offered some remedial touch and remote functionality, but really seemed like a poor replacement for an iPhone or a regular tablet. Now, Samsung has released a Korean HDTV that comes with a JournE-like tablet. Is touch the new future of living room remotes?

At least the Samsung remote makes such a future look appetizing. The device — dubbed the LED TV Couple — a 55-inch LED backlit LCD HDTV capable of 1080p that is paired with a full featured touchscreen tablet.

It’s the tablet that’s the star of the show. 7-inch diagonally, the tablet offers up a visual program guide for the television, including video previews of TV shows, movies and media stored on your PC, which can then be streamed via 802.11n WiFi to your television.

But it gets even cooler. The Samsung LED TV Couple is capable of taking live television, video or even Blu-Ray content and streaming it to the device itself. Which means that the ubiquitous film-watching bathroom break no longer requites the application of the pause button.

Very interesting, although there’s no word yet of a US or European release. My question is whether or not that tablet can be used for gaming. It would be nice to stream my Xbox 360 Bioshock game to the tablet and balance it on my knees while I game in bed. Oh, sure, latency probably wouldn’t be great, but the dream still ebbs.
