LG Announces Borderless LCD Television with LED Backlight

September 11th, 2009 at 12:21 am |

Televisions take up a big part of the living room these days. An entire wall could be filled with one television. Well ok, maybe not an entire wall, but the televisions are really getting bigger and bigger. If you have a 42″ television, that’s not something that’s going to impress your
neighbors anymore. Unless it can fly or responds completely to your voice, there isn’t anything special about it. However, LG has created something that might actually impress them anyway. During the IFA in Berlin, LG announced two LCD televisions that not only have led backlights, but are also completely borderless! The thin line between the edge of the screen and the border around it, has completely disappeared because the manufacturer used a single layer screen.

LG has given the SL8000, that’s available in the sizes of 32″, 37″, 42″ and 47″, one single sheet of glass that covers the entire front side of the TV. According to the manufacturer, this sheet of glass is possible because of a new technique that has recently been developed. They apply this technique in the building process of this beautiful TV. The border that’s around the screen, actually becomes visible the moment the Television is turned ON. LG also claims that they made the TV less vulnerable for scratches and light reflection should have been reduces with 90 percent because of the anti glare filter.

The SL8000 is 1.77 inch thick at its thickest point. They created this television with led backlight that doesn’t only save on energy, but should also produce a better image quality. The dynamic contrast is 150.000:1, while the response time is about 2ms. The SL8000 also has a 24p Real Cinema-mode, a sensor that measure the amount of light in the environment and a 200Hz TruMotion image refreshing speed. Through the USB 2.0 connection on the television, video files like HD-DIVX and MKV files should be a problem, tells LG. The build in Bluetooth connectivity should make it possible to use a wireless headset. The SL8000 televisions will be released real soon.

The televisions from the SL9000 rage, that are available in the sizes 42″ and 47″ are with a thickness of 1 inch, should be a bit thinner than the SL8000 models. On the front side of these televisions, the same borderless design can be found, but the LCD televisions uses edge leds background lights that are built in the borders of the TV. This gives the televisions a dynamical contrast of 3.000.000:1 according to LG, but the maximal image refreshing speed of TruMotion is only 100Hz. LG claims that the speakers are built in the TV, but are invisible.
