Magnavox Compact DVD Player (DP100MW8B)

We had our current DVD player for about 8 years now and, after hundreds of movies (maybe even thousands) and the fact it has been moved to six different homes, it was starting to get pretty worn out. It still worked, but there were some DVDs it would not play.

Because we were getting frustrated with it (especially when we were trying unsuccessfully to watch Ghost Hunters), my wife and I decided to pick up a new DVD player. I didn’t want to spend a fortune on one because I eventually want to get a DVD Player/Recorder so I picked out one of the cheapest ones I could find, a Magnavox Compact DVD Player (Model DP100MW8B).

When I purchased this item for about $27, I wasn’t expecting a lot in terms of quality (which is why I ignored the Walmart cashier when she told me she had one that broke a few months after she bought it). I was just hoping it would be an improvement over what we had. And, I do feel it was.

The DVD player is very simple to set up. In total, it took me about 5 or 6 minutes and most of that was me trying to get it plugged in behind my TV stand (which is very heavy and I didn’t feel like moving by myself). In fact, I think I had more issues with putting the batteries in the remote (I had them in backwards).

Quality wise, it was better than expected. The first DVD I put in was one we had problems with in our other DVD player. We didn’t have the same issues with the Magnavox DVD Player. The picture and sound quality also seemed to be better. With our other DVD player, we would have to turn the sound up pretty high to hear anything. This one we didn’t have to do that with.

I also love the compact size of this player. We have a limited amount of room on our shelves for it but I only had to clear a small hole. It’s out of the way and easy to access when we want to use it.

One other thing I discovered about this particular brand and model that I thought was cool was the fact you can also play CDs and MP3s on it. I’m not sure how much I’ll use this feature (we have a stereo right next to it on the shelf) but it was definitely something I’m sure others might like.

I’m not sure how long I’ll have this particular DVD player; mostly because I do still intend on eventually replacing it with a DVD recorder. But, considering what I paid for it, I do feel I got a decent product for a reasonable price and I am happy with my purchase.
