This is because spam messages have become a very serious problem and a majority of people would prefer to use an e-mail provider that can filter out as much spam messages as possible. Most of the free e-mail providers have now incorporated spam filters in their e-mail systems. Gmail – Gmail is web based e-mail system from the web giant Google. Gmail has one of the best spam filters that is effective and can block majority of spam messages. The spam messages are automatically filtered and stored in a spam older. The users have an option to delete or retrieve the messages from the spam folder. The user also gets an option to mark the spam messages that have landed up in inbox and Gmail will automatically filter such messages in future. The spam messages are automatically deleted from the spam folder one month after they are received.

Yahoo Mail – Yahoo mail is another popular e-mail service. Yahoo has also incorporated spam filters in its e-mail though they are not as effective as Gmail’s filters. Just like Gmail, you can mark messages that get into your inbox as spam and Yahoo will filter them in future. Yahoo gives you a junk or bulk folder, that you need to check from time to time for any important messages that may have landed there accidentally or you can simply delete them.

Hotmail – Hotmail is another free e-mail service provider that was very popular in the past. Hotmail has also incorporated spam filters in its e-mail system and it provides multiple layers of security. The spam filter is good but does not match the effectiveness of Gmail or Yahoo. You can also set your account to receive e-mails only from the people that are in your contact list but this can prove counter productive if you are using the e-mail address for business purposes.
