IPhone OS 3.1

September 11th, 2009 at 12:54 pm |

With the release of iTunes 9, Apple also released an update for the iPhone OS (Operating System). This brings the iPhone OS to 3.1. The new OS boasts a lot of fixes for problems the phone was having. People with jailbroken or unlocked iPhones should be warned that it is not yet known to be safe to upgrade to the new iPhone OS. The iPhone Dev-Team is warning that the new firmware released by Apple makes changes in the baseband. Users who decided to update their iPhone firmware through iTunes 9 will lose their unlock and jailbreak and possibly not be able to get them back. Any user who wants to keep their phone unlocked or jailbroken should wait until there is a hacked firmware release.

Here is a rundown of the new features available in the new OS from the Apple iPhone Site

Genius Updates:

Genius Recommendations for Apps -Essentially Genius is going beyond music and will make app recommendations based on previously downloaded apps.

Genius Mixes – Genius will now create mixes for you based on what is in your library.

Download Ringtones Wirelessly – Pretty straightforward – choose from ringtones in the iTunes Store.

Organize Apps in iTunes – Rather than moving your app icons around on your phone, you can now drag them in iTunes on a virtual home screen, and then sync it to your iPhone.

iPhone OS 3.1 Other Features: Straight from the Apple iPhone site.

• Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos

• iTunes U content organization

• Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store

• Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store

• Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll

• Option to “Save as new clip” when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS

• Better iPhone 3g Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on

• Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe

• Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets

• Paste phone numbers into the keypad

• Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS

• Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)

• Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling

• Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly

There does appear to be some very worthwhile features in this update. If you are just an average iPhone user, download iTunes 9 and sync up and update to OS 3.1. Though if you have your iPhone unlocked or jailbroken, it would be best to avoid this one for at least a few days to a week. It would be better for you to wait until more is known about a hacked firmware.
