Research Report: Asparagus Cures Hangovers, Protects Livers

September 13th, 2009 at 6:36 pm |

Can asparagus cure a hangover? Asparagus apparently increases enzymes in the liver to boosts metabolism of alcohol. Asparagus is loved around the world and asparagus as a hangover remedy would be readily embraced.

Joan Sumpio, RND, has posted an article on mb.com.ph titled “Asparagus as hangover remedy.” It has already been published in “The Journal of Food Science.”

The study showed that asparagus leaves could help in the treatment of an alcohol hangover and also protect the liver from the toxic results of alcohol. Of course liver damage is always a concern for people who drink routinely.

The study was done in Korea by Korean researchers and showed that asparagus leaves protected the liver from a number of toxic invaders.

As I said asparagus is popular around the world. It is an excellent source of such nutrients as Vitamin K, Folate, vitamin C and A as well as Manganese, Copper, Potassium and iron to name a few.

Asparagus also contains insulin that helps protect the intestine by creating friendly bacteria.

It also protects against hydrogen peroxide.

It would seem that the extract should be taken prior to an evening of drinking because if it is taken after the liver damage would already have been done.

The asparagus treatment seems to have more reality than hangover treatments when I was a young adult.

First it was suggested that you drink what you got drunk with. If you got drunk drinking too much beer, then you should drink some beer. The same procedure should be used with whisky.

Another concept that was preached was to drink honey.

Another recipe that I was taught was to take a raw egg and mix it with hot sauce as hot as you could stand it.

The residuals of liver disease are terrible. They are particularly terrible if they come from alcohol.

The biggest problem is that there is usually a waiting list of some length for a transplant. There is no cure for a damaged liver but a transplant so you could have a real problem.

The best thing to do is avoid the problem of liver disease altogether and it seems that asparagus will help a drinker with that problem.
